Solution for using an iPhone in the factory iPod Dock

Hello,

I thought i would post my solution for using an iPhone with the standard factory dock. Those who have tried this will note that the door will not shut when an iPhone, or iPod Touch for that matter, is inserted into the dock. An easy solution for this is to remove the door (it has a similar mechanism to a toilet roll holder, one of the pegs slides in slightly, allowing the door to be pulled off.

This however does not make up for the cr@pness of the standard dock. I had tried setting up playlists 1-6 to no avail, and started thinking about getting a standard AUX socket and disconnecting the dock. Another thing which annoyed me was the fact that the dock did not charge my iPhone 3G, and when playing music combined with the bluetooth handsfree, my battery wasn't lasting too well.

My first part of my setup/solution is this. This allows you to have your iPhone out from under your seat which is easier, and allows you to keep the little door on making things look tidier! To solve the charging issues I needed one of these. This does what it says on the tin, and enables the factory dock to charge your iPhone/iTouch and all new iPods too.

This is easy to set up, simply plug the cable into the factory dock as shown below:

I then routed the cable through the gap between the door and the seat:

This part is now personal preference and what you want to do. The cable is now there for you to put your iPod wherever you want. I noticed the centre armrest has a small cutout on the side so the cable can be routed in there if you want to keep your ipod hidden. I wanted mine up on the dash, so i purchased the relevant brodit connectors/holder:

You will notice that the charge converter is plugged in before the brodit connector. I experimented with plugging the charge connector in first but whilst it still charged my phone, audio came from the phones speaker instead of the cars.

I simply routed the cable behind the plastic trim on the centre console to neaten things up a bit:

There is one last thing you will need to do to overcome the pathetic playback capabilities of the standard dock. This requires that you have a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch. If you plugin a non-jailbroken phone/iPod you will get this:

This sucks as you cannot change tracks or select playlists. So you have to install a piece of software from Cydia (the unofficial app store for jailbroken iphones). It is called NoAccessorySplash. It means that you then get this:

As you can see, my phone is charging, and i can change/select tracks!! There is one problem which i still haven't been able to work around. The stock headunit constantly tells the iphone to play. You can pause it but within 2 seconds it will play automatically again. This means you cannot play audio from other apps. Most satnavs do not work properly because of this. The voice prompts get cut off, Navigon still works as it plays the prompts over the audio and Navmi also works (i use Navmi its great value for money and works really well. Looks good too). One thing you can do is move your iPod library temporarily, some software, again from Cydia, allows you to do this. SwapTunes is the name of that application. I have had some success with this, but sometimes the head unit decided there isn't any iPod and reverts to radio, sometimes it will play cricket.

Hopefully the above helps some of you guys out. My apologies for the dirty car too, i had just returned from Scotland.

Not a bad place to have it if you are taking it in and out regularly. I bet you still suffer from the accessory connected screen though. I believe it is VAGs fault for not paying a fee to Apple.

Hi there. I don't mind using my head unit to change the songs etc. All I need to know is that cable dock extender, does it play the music fine. And does it charge at all?

The cable on its own does not charge up the iPhone 3G or 3GS. Nor will it charge up a iPod after a certain date. So iPod Classics, 2nd Gen iPod touches and 4th Gen iPod Nanos are out of luck. The others should all charge properly. The cable will play music fine.

You can see from one of the pictures that I have a second piece of plastic attached to the cable before it enters my Dock. This is a charge adapter, this enables charging on the items I mentioned above. However (on mine at least) I have to put this after the cable, not before, otherwise the sound comes out of my iPhone not the car (I could still change tracks with the car however).

Hope that helps matey!

Yeah top man. If I'm honest I don't wanna be spending too much money on it. I'm happy squeezing it in and then charging it seperatley lol but thanks for the info. The adapter straight from seat is £69 aswell. Is a lot of money for a simple solution!

I'm trying to get my iPhone 4 to work through the factory connection, it just says accessory not supported.

What do I need?

It could be something to do with the charge system. I read somewhere that the ipods charge through a 12v system/signal but the iphone 3gs and 4 are a 5v system. You can order an adapter from the states. Not tried it myself as yet, so I may be wrong. I just rely on a USB stick at the moment... Search ebay for Iphone 5v or similar...

Warwickshire once.
I use the 3GS and have a small voltage converter which I got off ebay (plugs straight into the IPOD dock and connects to my cable). I then used the cable recommended by the op.

My iPhone 4 says that, it still plays music and charges with the converter fine though.

Unfortunately because the iPhone 4 has not been jailbreaked, we are still stuck with the accessory connected screen. I am guessing that will be sorted soon!

I have a 2010 leon fr. How do I get my iPhone hooked up to it. So calls can be made and answered? Anyone

Neyran,

If you car does not have the bluetooth module fitted, I would say your easiest method would be to buy a parrot handsfree kit. I actually have a parrot kit that has all the correct cables & adapters for a VAG group car that is surplus to requirement as my Leon FR has the bluetooth kit fitted. The parrot is about 11 months old and in full working order. It is very simple to fit also. (I think it's a CK3100)

This would literally connect to your iphone via bluetooth and when you switch your engine on automatically connect to your phone and calls would be routed through your car stereo speakers. - I found the kit to be excellent. I also have the original box & instructions- if you are interested, PM me and we can arrange something.
