Where is the EGR valve on my Leon?

Hi Guys,

I'm not a piston-head, but I'll certainly try my hand. My engine management light has been on for a few months now: The IMF motor is dead (amongst a couple of other signals that seem to associate themselves with this).

As I understand, a common problem is some teeth snapping inside the EGR valve and can be replaced reasonably easily. I've been quoted the better part of alot for parts and labour so I'm considering sourcing the part myself as well as fitting it. My first question is where the hell is the unit within my Leon mk2?

The other question I have is what are the negative effects of this on my engine in the long term?

I'm assuming once the part is replaced I can reset the light via my reader and it will stay off permanently.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The egr valve is right in the middle if the engine bay underneath the engine cover. It has a 3 inch black rubber tube going into the bottom of it and the top is connected to the inlet manifold.

Search egr valve and u will find pics.

The paddle valve that has the teeth missing is actually called an air throttle. Usually around the £200 mark from a factors. If u order an egr valve it is a different part.

Takes about 20 mins to do.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, I want to take my egr valve off to give it a clean but don't know where it is or what is involved in taking it off.

It's harder to do on the fr compared to the ref sport. Everybody says u need to remove the inlet manifold on the fr, but u don't. U need a pair of small mole grips to rotate the bolts as u can't get anything else into them. There are 3 bolts that hold it onto the manifold. The always 1 is behind the silver pipe with the new gasket mod that everyone has done.

I cleaned mine last week having just bought the car, I was getting 32mpg average, I now get 43mpg. It make some difference.

Search egr valve or air throttle, they are differnt things but connected and there are loads of threads.

Cheers Rosscop, my mpg isn't too great either so I reckon my egr is in desperate need of a clean.
I'm working away at the mo, so I'll take a look at the weekend.

I'm getting good MPG but occasional rough idle on my ref sport. IF I take off the EGR valve to check/clean it do I need to replace any gaskets?

Also I noticed that the bolts on the exhaust side pipe look like splined heads - anyone know what size/type they are - doesn't look like Torx to me

U don't need to replace any, but if u haven't changed to the new metal gasket on that metal pipe with the torex bolts u should.

U can use a 10mm Allen key, I think.

Thanks for the info - I'll open her up and have a look this weekend.

It's the reference sport FYI.

What would you recommend I clean the unit with?

If someone does get a chance to pop a pic of the location of the egr valve I too would be very grateful.

Top half is EGR valve proper, bottom half is air throttle:

FYI > Diagnostics list it as an "Intake Manifold Flap" aka Throttle Body.

for the 2.0 140 BKD, you're looking at £220 from Eurocarparts. Seat, VW etc quote a price between £279 and £315 + vat depending on who you speak with.

The EGR can be cleaned out with carb cleaner, however for the time and effort, i'd just spend the 50ish quid on a new EGR or a by pass pipe.

The throttle is made by pierburg and can be bought from there website for about 175 quid.

Clean ur egr valve and throttle with wd40 it does the trick.

If ur car runs on for a second when u switch off the ignition then the throttle needs replaced.

Trade is not 196 quid because I ordered 1 from tms in stirling and delivered same day was just over 200 and I'm not trade.

Order from pierburg 199 quid inc vat. Part number 7.14393.16.0. If u phone them u can get cheaper.

My brand new 1 is sitting in a scrappy somewhere.

The place u buy ur parts from must buy them expensive then. But of that's wot u paid that's great.

In the end I cancelled my order from tms and bought it from motac in stirling and got it for 175 quid. Don't know where they got it from, bit I use to work there and they will still be making money selling it at that price.

Think they get from an engine parts specialist in Glasgow.

Decided not to p**s about with cleaning the EGR and shelled out for a new one today:

P1000026.jpg

Part number is 038 131 501AN for the 2.0 140 BKD engine (same for many others as well).

Price was £89 including VAT, gasket was £2 from my local TPS. Not sure where the £50 ish came from earlier in this thread but this seems to be the going rate when I googled it.

Will hopefully fit it at the weekend and see if it fixes my symptoms - will use the standard gasket first and then try the metal one if it's looking promising.

Well I fitted it and thought it fixed my problem for a couple of days but then the symptoms came back - to be honest they are better some days than others so I don't think the EGR changed anything. The old one was moderately dirty but I reckon was probably OK actually...
If you're going to do it yourself beware that a couple of the bolts are a PITA to get access to and then get any purchase on them.

The conclusion I've come to is that mine only stutters when I'm on the brakes so I think it it some kind of vacuum problem. I'm going to get it booked in at the garage when I get back from holiday
