VAGCOM itself is an incredibly slow connection speed (by todays standards), I've seen VAGCOM for sale with a 486 laptop (that looked more like a modern desktop with a battery strapped to the back!).

Bringing it a bit more up to date, if the laptop can run XP, it can run VAGCOM.

I run mine (full registered hex can USB) on a HP tc1100 with 1.5gb processor, 40gb hard drive, XP SP3 that has 30gb of it's memory taken up by elsawin, etka, auto data and thousands of fault logs yet it still performs flawlessly. Only time it's a little scetchy is on late can bus or new UDS vehicles where the info exchange causes the cursor to have a slight delay.

We also have a full version of VCDS on our VAS6150 panasonic toughbook but the software clashes and doesn't run very well together, hence we now use another laptop for it.

I'm not sure what to go for. Ideally something cheap but don't know if it'll be slower than a week in jail. Especially when the battery life on portables aren't that great.

Also known me, it'll take ages to figure out how to work the dam thing

Seems really cheap. I thought I had to buy a pink netbook for that price range. Lol

Was thinking of getting a core i3 laptop for it.

Do you think that would be ott?

What determines the speed of VCDS (VAG-COM) is the control modules in the vehicle. The compute platform was a limitation back when we started in 1999 - but today? Most any computer running XP will give the same performance as the really expensive over clocked units sold running 64 bit Windows 7. I would not spend big bucks on a computer that is going run VCDS. If you are buying a fancy machine for another reason, then by all means, VCDS will run great on it. But, you don't need all that to have good performance.

If you read our computer requirements (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/faq_1.html#1.4) you'll see they are not very aggressive.

Does anyone have any issues using USB cables then, or none at all?

Thinking about going for it, and using my netbook.

I could be barking up the complete wrong tree, but I thought that people sometimes had problems using USB? Did these not initially have to be plugged in on serial ports?!

I'm blatantly about 5 years out of date...

To be honest, even the USB leads still contain a USB-Serial convertor, so you are pretty much spot on!

I still have a serial version of the lead, I use it for VDS-Pro.

I think the issues you originally asked about are more to do with the quality of the leads. Most of these leads come from China, and as with most cheap goods there is a tendency for them to fail quicker than expected. Some leads don't even survive the boat trip!

I recommend that people buy from a UK seller for that reason. If it does turn out to be faulty, then you're only returning it to the UK rather than all the way back to the far east.
