Oil viscosity used in TDI 6 Speedgearboxes

See thread http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=380175 where I am experiencing Gear selection problems on 2nd gear when cold, I was wondering if there are difference viscosity oils that can be used in a TDI 6 Speed Gearbox. Obviously there will be different oils used for Northern Europe or North America so I wondered if there were various that could be used in UK ? (Why I ask is that the problem goes away when the Engine warms up the Gearbox...............or in the summer when the ambient temperature is higher thus reducing the viscosity of the gearbox oil).

Right if its an 0a8 gearbox ( ibiza, althea 6spd) then it must use special oil called sintofluid fe by fucus or the genuine oil.

if its a leon 6spd these are different and can use redline mtl

p.s not having a pop at OPIE they're great on service too-- you may well need to use them for Fuchs stuff

i would stick with the trans oil specifics, recommended by seat
i always put motul or fuchs , cant go wrong with those

some say in a manual trans , it;s not necessary to change it, but i always did

I've just had a conversation with a Gearbox reconditioner company (well respected) that they only put ATF in all their gearboxes otherwise they will not give them a 24 month warranty. They recon that because of the stresses that a ATF has to put up with it exceeds any requirement of a manual gearbox and keeps it's viscosity at a bigger range of temperature. Anyone else heard of this or even done it ?

interesting idea much modern box oil is like water!!! if fitted you would have to go with their recommendation but without a lot more spec' checking and opinions I'd play safe

Nic, Hi using the oilspecifications.org site I thought I'd try & track down some VW G 052 171SAE 70W75 viscosity gear oil but even VW dealers or VW Parts Specialists can't supply it. Having said that I'm guessing (up till now) that I've 75 Viscosity Oil in my box......but I don't know because the same VW Dealers or VW Parts specialist can tell me what specification is stock for my Gearbox. Even Oil manufacturers can't tell me the Spec required for my Gearbox. for all I know I might have a 90 Viscosity oil in mine and therefore a 75 may work well in Winter. The performance (speed and ease of gear change) must be related to viscosity because in the recent outside Temps of 30DegC and doing 100miles per day the Gear change speed & ease has been fantastic !! (in all gears) so I'd love to have a Multi to have a good viscosity at both ends of the Temp range.............I'd like to change it for a Non-stock Gear oil (Who makes VW Stock gearbox oil ?)

My Engine is a CBAB & Gearbox Type M6F / Gearbox Code KRM where can I find what Spec & viscosity is standard ?

Paul can't find a KRM 6 speed nearest is KDM is it a LEON? 6 speed lists 3 different oils ---I guess G 502 171 A2 is the upgrade of what you were after and I does specify front wheel drive(transverse) --who knows what's in there already only way is to get rid and plump for one from Fuchs 75W or VAG 70w/75 or you could give them a ring at Stoke they're helpful cheers Nic

hi paul, had another look and still can't find "KRM" I would ring Fuchs at stoke and go with what they say--if it was me - the more I see of VW the more I despair, 6 days to get a plug lead WTF? -then @£22 each local spares shop full set of quality ones for £44 delivery 2 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nic, Hi again..................final VW Tech Team have come back and they have told me : G 052 172 A2 ............which I can't find in that VW Oils Spec you sent before. So the next thing is to approach a VW Parts specialist to see if they have got it.........but of course it would be VW Oil (who makes their oil do you know)...................the strange thing I thought is that the Tech team at VW can't tell me the viscosity (which when all said and done is what I'm after to try & go for a Multi grade but the Winter Viscosity lower than what I've currently got in there)

I'm even worse off now...................if you do a google on " G 052 172 A2 " it looks to be a Spray Lubricant for Doors, roof bars etc !

you just beat me to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! according to VORTEX, A1 is a liquid and A2 a spray someone's badly crossed a wire but that's V dub for you I'd try Fuchs who I believe supply VW in the fatherland give them a ring at Stoke on Trent---- they know their stuff

The official listing in Elsawin is SAE 70 W 75 (synthetic)

I've changed my gearbox oil using Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 rated to G052171A2.

Thanks Badger..............I wonder why VW couldn't get to that info. ....if that's what is fitted in my gearbox then it beats my thoughts on getting a multigrade that reduces the viscosity in Winter. (I was expecting it to be a 75 or even 80 or a Multigrade like you have and therefore a 70W 75 Fushs would of helped.

I'm waiting for Fuchs to come back to me as I spoke to them yesterday like Nic suggested

I've had a reply from Fuchs and they are suggesting a 75W which according to Elsawin stock is SAE 70 W 75 so if I'm trying to reduce the viscosity in Winter their suggestion won't be an improvement.

You could buy the oil direct from VW, fresher oil makes it easier!
