What sensor is this ?

Is this a rain sensor ? as I haven't actually seen it in "action" yet.

The ambient light sensor is in the rev counter, I forgot to add in my initial post that I don't have auto lights or a cracked screen ! ( overhead telephone line).

Well if it is a rain sensor and it started to rain whilst driving, which I have, wouldn't it automatically start the wipers wiping the screen at preset speeds, which are dependant upon the intensity of rain ?

The wiper stalk needs to be in the correct position for auto wipers to engage. If not in the right position they won't start automatically

Correct position is one up from OFF (what you would otherwise think of as intermittent). As @kiddo says, this is the only position that uses the sensor.
