I bought a kit from eBay, came from an engineering company in the UK. Cost me £120 including all the shells followers and bolts. Just added some rebuild fluid and gasket fluid for the pump end of the camshaft clamp. Easy job if you’re careful with the timing. To be honest I think I spent more time making sure I was right with that than the actual spannering

I think repairing is a bit out of my skill set, I took it to a VAG specialist to get a quote.

He pointed out that the timing belt might need doing.
It's 4 years old so I might as well do it while at it..

I have a feeling it's gonna be rather expensive... I'm even debating if to sell it as it is

Parts are gonna be £300 so with labour as well it make make it un economic. Happens with a lot of these cars if owners can’t keep them going, shame they are a great car

Just an update on this, got the car back.

Lobe 1 was partially worn and 4 was shot completely all in all it was £760 in total for camshaft kit, timing kit, oil filter and oil change.

Car runs better obviously but I need to test it on a long run.

Is £760 reasonable for all the above?

I’d say that was OK for a garage to do the work. Parts must have been £300+ plus the labour to do both plus a service.

Sounds about right to me, gonna be a fair bit of labour to fit all that lot!

Thanks for the advise and the replys guys, to be fair I thought it was reasonable, expensive but fair.

Car is back on the road and runs lovely, I'm doing 70 mile round trips this week so I'm glad it's working.

I'll have to do some overtime to cover the cost tho but it's worth it.

I think I'll have to reseal the door cards but well that's a minor issue which I am capable to do myself
