R32 is a nice car but i take it you wont keep that long either? maybe best to look at something that maybe a risk as if you dont like it you wont have it long

i was thinking about 996's
id be more tempted to get a new shape r32 than an old
i do agree in principal that the s3 is the same car, but with few differences

Horrendous fuel consumption in the R32.

Raced one once when i had my Focus RS and his computer had got down to 8.7mpg over 20 or so miles:-o

My advice is go for something out of the ordinary or something you think you wouldn't initially like..........................may sound stupid, but some of the best cars i have had have been the ones like that.

Like you,i love changing my cars, and since Feb 2005 i have had,

Focus RS.....Absolutely fantastic at everything(except economy),as long as you keep an eye on the tyres.

Audi A6 2.7 Twin Turbo......Rubbish,not even that quick, but bloody comfy.:(

Golf GT TDI 150.....Very quick for a diesel, difficult to find with sensible miles, and looked stunning once i had fully modded it(Anni kit,19"RS6's,Coilovers etc).:D

Mini Cooper S.....Pretty bloody quick,handled well,but tiny inside,and i was only getting a max of 23mpg from it.:wtf:

BMW E46 M3 Convertible.....the most dissappointing of the lot, never felt particularly fast, rubbish aftercare from BMW,and i lost £3500 on it in 6 weeks, although i did go hunting for the speed limiter once, and could not find it;)

Ariel Atom.....well,what can i say, great fun for a month, but the novelty soon wore off, although it teaches you a lot about driving if you pay attention;)

Leon Cupra R......Very pleased all round, especially since the remap and lowering:funk:

So,my suggestions is get a Focus RS if you have not already had one,or mod the LCR,as it really does become a great allround car for very little outlay!!!

The older shape R32 holds its value well, very well in fact. Whilst looking at getting a LCR, the R32 was more expensive with virtually the same chassis and parts. The only difference between the two apart from cosmetics are the engine, gearbox and 4 wheel drive system. I do really like the R32, it doesn't look the best compared with the competition and its too heavy but being a VAG car you know that its gonna last and stay within 3k of the purchase fee.

The V6 in the R32 is nice, sweet sound, good torque figures but lacks horsepower IMO. You can get a supercharger kit for the R32, its a better solution to turboing the engine as its progressive power through the rev range rather than a hit after spooling. Its rather expensive to run, but so is a LCR. Tyres will tend to take a hit on the fronts, the rears will last for ages cause very little power will go through them unless your properly ragging it. The maintainance on the 4wd system means you'll need a service every 10k or so (well worth it though). Apart from that only a few small niggles which can be rectified via modding its a great car to drive and live with.

Other alternatives that come to mind are

Audi S3, New Leon Cupra, Civic Type R, Focus RS, Focus ST, Some Jap Crap like Skyline R33 and R34 GTT, MR2 (old shape), Celica, TVR Chimera (v. expensive to run but extremely fun to drive). Modded LCR (susp, remap, filter, zorst, optimax, bit of engine fittling and its good for 300bhp).

I once wrote this...

update on my post.

I have been using it for the last couple of days & probably done about 150 miles in it.

first impressions were good compared to the longer term view.
the thing drinks petrol like blokes drink larger on a stag weekend! £20 got me 60 miles!

its just not that quick, not as quick as my modded cupra certainly.
the handling is twitchy & the ride is poor.
the gorgeous looking seats aren't that comfortable & the steering wheel is a little to thick.

overall it just feels big & heavy, not a car i would own.

the most annoying thing is it just has no presence on the road, no one wants to get out of your way if your 'on it'
I even got flashed for over taking (on a road herts meet attendants know well as the pub is on it) a fecking micra even though i pulled back in with a good 200 yards to spare!

here's a few pics of her tonight...

Lets be honest,as standard the R32 has only got about 15bhp more than the qouted figures for a standard LCR,but quite a bit more weight to pull around,so it won't feel that quick. Also,it has no turbo, which even a small engined turbocharged car feels nippy for what it is...................i had a remapped and modded Smart Car a couple of years ago,and that always felt quicker than what it was.

I have come to the conclusion, especially this year with the cars i have owned and been really disappointed with, that you can ultimately have a lot of fun in the most unlikely vehicles, and most importantly, for not a lot of money.I have just bought a Seat Arosa 1.4 Sport as a runabout and had some FK's put on it,and i love driving the thing....................because it's FUN.The only problem now is that my LCR is parked up from one week to the next and gets very little use, although when i do drive it.............................:D :D :D

I've recently went from a 52 plate LCR, which I had for over 3 years and done 80K miles to a MkV R32 with DSG. The performance is that much different although the way it is delivered is. In the R32 there is no sensation of acceleration or speed, no wheel spin, no torque steer, no turbo or in fact jerks between gear changing. In fact all you get is the speedo going up and the lovely sound of a V6. From that point of view it's not as much "fun", however it is much more refined. I'm not even sure the 2 cars should be even compared directly.

When choosing, I drove the GTI and it felt just like the LCR but with better suspension.

I loved my LCR but I also love the R32, although with the latter I get to see more of the nice girl at my local Shell garage :)

It depends really what you want from a car. I'm sure the new Cupra will be a great drivers car as it's based on the MKV chassis so maybe that's an option for you. Personally, I don't like the styling of the new Leon.
