Intake cleaning....

Having already disabling my EGR valve via VagCom, I wanted to block it off completely and also clean out my intake manifold and my intercooler pipes etc...

Now then, being very lazy, is there anything i can spray into the intake side of things after the MAF, that will clear all the soot build up or will i have to take things apart and clean by hand???

Having had my Intercooler on a couple of months, i checked the pipes and there full of black sh*t!!!

Any info would be helpful..

Regards

okay mate how's it going?

best thing is to call allards and order a race pipe egr replacement. 57 all in.

then buy a intake manifold gasket take it off and clean it, it will be the last time you'll ever need to and the intake temps will drop alot! and combustion will be better (better airflow)

just ordered some Forte air intake cleaner which is sensor friendly, not cheap though.

was thinking of taking my throttle body off and cleaning it good and proper, you could buy some cheap carb cleaner but I opted for sensor friendly cleaner.

** Do TDI's have throttle bodies to?

its ok mate...

Ive just been down to my garage, and had a quick poke around...

My EGR seems to be soot free, but my intercooler pipes have oil on them???

Can anyone explain to me why its there, where its come from and is it normal to have oily pipes?

i know the oil breather can release small aomunts of oil into the intake pipe of the turbo this is then moved around from the turbo into the ic pipes think the tdi is worse than the 20vt for this as mine was clean on the inside of the pipes after 10K

noticed when fitting my forge fmic at the weekend that my pipes had quite a bit on oil in them as well, so i'd say its normal - maybe something to do with the egr!

can this be stopped tho???
having fitted a reasonably efficient CCV oil seperator, the short answer seems to be no, but it is reduced and then there's the turbo, I guess no one can say what normal leakage is. As for the oil in the pipes I'd just drain the bottm intercooler one now and again, a thoro' clean won't last long

Be very careful about spraying anything into the intake of a diesel!!!

Diesels do not have a throttle valve, so the only thing that controls the power output is the amount of fuel injected into the engine. If you squirt something combustible into the intake, you're adding fuel that the ECU doesn't know about. If there's enough of the stuff pooled in the intake, the engine can run out of control on that fuel - and possibly over-rev itself in the process.

Having seen pictures of the kind of crud that can accumulate in the intake, it's very doubtful that you'd get any of it off using just a spray cleaner. But those pictures are from a car running on really crap fuel - intake clogging should be much less of a problem for us in this country.

.

I did exactly this a while ago, though i was lucky & did no damage. I was using redex to clean the intake on my Escort TD . Not a lot was happening & i gave the car a blip on the throttle. Well there was a small pool of oil near the front of the turbo & as the turbo RPM went up, it sucked in the oil & the engine reved like a B*****d. I put it into first gear, dropped the clutch with my foot on the brakes & after about 2 - 3 seconds I stopped the engine.

I learned a lesson that day :)
