v5 milage

hi all i'm looking for a v5 and have found one its a 2000 on a x.
170bhp and loads of toys,
the only down side is that it has done 115,000 miles it has full service history.
using the search i have found it needs its cam chain changing at 120k miles
how much does that roughly cost ?
i haven't driven it yet as its quite a distance from home so all the info would help so i can ask before i make the 200mile round trip to see it.

All though they are supposed to take very high mileages, depending on your budget, there should be lots of much lower mileage examples around at very reasonable prices given the spec is very high like you say. Don't know about cost of changing a chain - could be quite a bit though. I believe they may recommend changing the water pump while job is being done? I know they are meant to inspect the chain at 60k onwards.

Are there no examples more local to you (even if your not going to buy it) just to see what it should measure up to?

It would be worth the trip to get something with half the miles to be honest :)

Think what you might be saving in repairs to brakes and suspension due to high mileage wear and it's probably cheaper in the long run.

although all this said if its just been used as a motorway cruiser all its life then it shouldnt of been too badly worked. I'd rather have a car with 100k motorway miles than a car with 60k thats been thrashed around town all the time.

Local/easy to get to cars are not always the best available. Take some time and travel to get to see the best ones. Sometimes if you buy cheap, you buy twice.

Thats a good call, it took me ages to find the right V5, but it is worth waiting/travelling for the right car. I reckon I drove about 500 miles all in looking for the right one. (is that excessive!?!)

Indeed, both our cars were viewed and collected over two hours drive from where we live. For me I try and buy cars outside London because there's a better chance they haven't spent their whole life changing gear in stop/start traffic and going over speed humps too quick.

Clearly though on your budget you are likely to be viewing somewhat higher mileage examples. If there was a very low mileage one going at that price I would be a little suspicious. That said, for what you get, the Toledo V5 is a real underrated bargain car right now.

thanx everyone ill give that one a miss as i rang my local garage and they said it would also have about 5 hours work on it ( about £250-£300) plus parts.
also they said that there isn't a set time for the change but around 120k it starts to get to the point of changing

Well I sold my v5 150 with 160k and it had never had a timing chain replaced as far as I know and it had full service history up to 145k.

Just my 2p worth.

£250-300 sounds brave i was quoted from vw for vr6 golf cam chain which i think the v5 is the little brother to .Of around £2000 and stealth racing quoted £1750.was told you have to take gearbox out then cyl head off to get at the chain no join in it its one piece:cry:

no the £250-£300 was just labour not parts

Yep, the V5 is almost identical in the timing chain stakes to the VR6.

There are 2 timing chains - upper and lower IIRC - so it's one heck of a big job to have them changed.

I was always advised to change at 120K by SEAT. However, I now have my V5 serviced by a local VW specialist (especially Golf's and Corrado's). They advised that they never change the VR6 chains unless :

a) Is starting to sound noisy.

b) They are taking the whole engine apart for other reasons. Then they will put new ones in.

Otherwise thay leave well alone.
Not saying don't change your chains at 120K and don't wish to tempt fete - just my experience.
