toledo 1.6s opinions

Hi all

I used to own a 1999 toledo v5 which i really enjoyed apart from a few niggling issues. I now have a 1.8vti-s 5 door civic which is very nice but a little too expensive on the fuel and insurance. My fiance is 4 months pregnant and we have just moved into a rented 3 bedroom house. As money is extremly tight i am looking for a cheaper car to run however everything i'm looking at in the 2k price bracket seems really old, or boring...execept for a nice 1.6s toledo i have seen. I am used to fast cars and wonder if i'll struggle to enjoy the 1.6s as it only has 100bhp, i don't drive fast anymore and really want a smooth, safe car that seems fairly modern whith good economy.

Does anyone have any opinions on the 1.6 engine? Would the 1.8 20v be a better option or will that be alot more expensive to run. Money is going to be tight when the baby arrives but i would still like to have a reasonable car.

Any views/opinions on the 1.6 would be very welcome.

Regards

Mark

Yeah I would love one but they just don't come into my price bracket really. Another v5 is tempting but it would be a mistake considering how i'm trying to lower my running costs.

Seconded, ins gp is either a 6 or an 8. More BHP than the 1.6 and probably twice the torque, stick to decent fuels (i.e. Shell) and you should be OK with it.

Don't be worried about high mileages, they can take it easily, plus you should get 46 mpg round town and 50+ mpg on a run.

But, if this 1.6 is a real beaut, good condition, good history and at the right price then go for it.

Only thing is you would probably rag the 1.6 to get anything at all out of it so it could be a false economy. I would buy a smaller car with a 1.6 engine but not something the size of the Tolly.

Yes, although the economy is starting to become an issue for me too as I change jobs this week - but it's just perfect when I travel 250 miles north to visit my parents and I would surely miss it if I had to get rid.

and you can get 40odd mpg if you drive normally and even with a fairly leaded foot you can still get 35mpg out of it

Comparison

Within my family we've had the following

mother Leon SE 1.8 v20
sister Leon 1.9 TDi 110bhp
father-in-law Leon SE 1.6
my self Toledo V5.

The V5 is undoubtedly the best but very expensive to run.

The Leon 1.6 is obviously the least powerfull and my father-in-law has regretted not getting the TDi almost since he bought it, as it has no get up and go.

My sister has driven my mothers 1.8 and believes her TDi is slightly better.

Having said that my mother has had no problems at all with here car. A point worth noting is the 1.8 has always een less popular and there are therefore less of them about.

In a way i regret buying my V5 for the economy issue alone. Its pretty poor, im not a sympathetic driver at all but even so its expensive too run without my mileage being paid and a car allowance i wouldnt get one i think, luckily for me it makes it less of a blow. I would say go for the TDi they are torquey and very economical and if they are anything like the Octavia i drove they are nippy enough.
