Just read the whole thread so far m0rk. Pretty impressive what you've done to date.

Where did you pick up your knowledge of the 6k platform, just from getting you head under the bonnet and getting your hands dirty?

Thank!

yeah, 7yrs ago the most adventurous thing I'd done was change my brake pads.... 5yrs ago Jason had to come & help me change my suspension on my first Ibiza.

After that it was a slippery slope of 'needing' to change my clutch.

Bit of Haynes manual & lateral thinking - but I'm not a mechanic, nor have I done a course.

I said half the point of doing the vario was because it wasn't a GTI looking car, the other half was to demonstrate that garages that charge £6k for an engine swap are ripping people off.

Luckily I did have a whole Cordie SX to rob all the bits from. And the vast majority of stuff will only bolt together one way, which is handy.

and if it doesnt an angle grinder usually persuades it , eh m0rk ...
must agree on the general consensus that you certainly know your way around an engine bay/ wiring loom on the mk2 variants

awww thanks

I've only ever bought 6k cars :(

apart from the Micra I got as a hand me down, and the Colt CZ that's the sensible car we've had:

1994 Ibiza 1.4 - stripped it bare & sold it
1997 Cordoba Coupe 2.0 16v - cut it up & weighed it in
1998 Cordoba Vario 1.6
1998 Ibiza GTi 2.0 8v
2000 Ibiza 1.4 - sold it in part ex for:
2001 Ibiza Cupra 20VT - sold to a forum member

I'm running out of decent examples to molest, so my next car might be more grown up. The people I work with don't get it... until something breaks, or falls off & I have a spare one in the garage.

So if you are saying its all the same, then would i be right in thinking that a coilover kit 4 the cordy would fit the vario!i would love to do a golf gttdi with full 4motion running gear to mine but i dont have that much gutts!was u going to turbo the engin you have in or put another engin in?

I fitted the suspension from my coupe to my vario. I think I was done & dusted in 90 mins.

THough once it's complete & legal I'll replace it with new stuff as it's a few years old now.

I'll be turbo'ing the ABF (2.0 16v) most likely. that appeals more to me than the easier option of an Ibiza engine.

It inspires me to get my head under the bonnet of my bar, but unfortunately i don't have the space near my house to tinker about yet!

Alright then!

Today was a bit of a tidying up day really

after about 4 months of not touching it (it fell off the axle stands & scared the shite out of me) I bought a new uber jack & secured it nice & properly.

exhaust is properly on, rear brake bias valve on securely (a left over from day two of the 'build') harnesses in, seat in, bit of interior stripping. Steering rack secured with badger supplier powerflex bushes.

I then thought about changing the hub carriers, rod ends & then I remebered that I don't have any manual rack tie rods. So dropped the car back down & put it all away.

Interesting thing about pattern part exhausts is that "they don't fit" - I had to seriously modify - with my favourite tool - the rear exhaust support. And it was then about 2" short of the tail end of the downpipe. Anyway , that's all fixed again.

ECU flash this week, a sanity check of the wiring & it might start next time I have a charged battery / jump start from one of the other cars.

The 8v's serving me fine for work trips, so the pressure is off at the moment for completion. But depending on how some personal stuff ends up in March will depend on if I'm on the hope straight, or about to make it a real money pit with some forced induction....

if all is well and as expected in March, then FI will be proven with a k03x turbo, then I'll have to go on a spending spree with bahnbrenner

On a seperate note, i'm no longer an engine virgin - we stripped down the broken escort on our drive - number 1 piston is sat at the bottom of its hole at a very odd angle, one of the rings is poking past it and there's what looks like the connecting piston rod poking out of the bottom of the sump :D I think we're going to get an engine and put it in .... surprised by how easy it was! I reckon we'd stripped off the head, intake, carb and manifold in a little under an hour! Mind you that was nothing compared to how quickly it died - 6 miles and about 10 minutes :D

Had another mate around today with a Mk1 astra cabriolet - he'd been storing it off the road here and had left a plastic tesco bag over the place where the airfilter goes. Anyway he arrives this morning with tax and drives off, 200 yards down the road he rings up for help - one look at the engine bay confirmed there was something wrong. Hmm, throttle won't stay open and the linkage was stiff, a flat vacuum pipe. Removed small pipe to find plastic sticking out of the throttle body .... removed air intake pipe to find the rest of tescos bag wound around the butterfly valve - i guess it's true that every little does indeed help :)

I'm still no M0rk but i think the bug may have bitten :)

I can't make rods & pistons though...

and I've not welded for 11yrs, so I'll have to get some practice on that
