Hi all

A colleague of mine has been having problems with his Polo.
It's a 1.4 petrol, 2004 or 2005 reg (can't remember now).

Symptoms:
Engine has cut out on a number of occasions, at least once in a pretty dangerous situation (outside lane of motorway!).
When this happens, the rev counter needle drops to nothing and the oil light flashes.

The car has recently been serviced, and the dealer was asked to look for faults, but said there were none. However I hooked up vag-com today and got the faults below.

Yesterday my colleague had the throttle body apart to give it a good clean - and initially the car wouldn't start after reassembly. However, after disconnecting the battery and reconnecting, it did start. After a few hiccups all seemed well, until the problem happened again this morning.

I think the misfire faults may be due to the initial startup after the throttle body had been off/cleaned.

Anyway, here are the faults from the engine module:

Code:
Friday,11,April,2008,13:04:35:03275
VAG-COM Version: Release 704.1

                Address 01: Engine
Control Module Part Number: 036 906 034 HL
  Component and/or Version: MARELLI 4MV 5511
           Software Coding: 00071
            Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
           Additional Info: WVWZZZ9NZ4Y218117 VWZ7Z0D9092076
5 Faults Found:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
        P0300 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16685 - Cylinder 1: Misfire Detected
        P0301 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16687 - Cylinder 3: Misfire Detected
        P0303 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16688 - Cylinder 4: Misfire Detected
        P0304 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
        P0322 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Readiness: 0000 0000

Also found this in the Cent. Eletric module, not sure if it's related:

Code:
Friday,11,April,2008,13:10:34:03275
VAG-COM Version: Release 704.1

                Address 09: Cent. Elect.
Control Module Part Number: 6Q1 937 049 D
  Component and/or Version: 0000 BN-SG. 1S34
           Software Coding: 25774
            Work Shop Code: WSC 00788
1 Fault Found:

01054 - Power Supply Relay; Terminal 30 (J317)
        28-00 - Short to Plus

We're assuming the engine speed sensor fault is the main culprit ?
Are these known to fail - and if so, any ideas how much they are to buy & how easy to replace ?

When I was doing my scan, we started it up and it sounded like it was running just fine.

Cheers

I know the engine speed sensor is a common failure in the beezas so I guess it would be the same in the polo. My mate had the same fault but never had an issue with the engine cutting out. Speed sensor is about £30 to replace I believe and a fairly easy job (not sure though).

My only thought is in relation to the oil light....what if the engine is overheating due to lack of oil and shutting off to protect itself? Thats a TOTAL guess however.

My old 1.4 16v MK4 used to cut out and flash oil on the dash when the dipstick was half way, the dealer just told me to ensure the level was at the top all the time. At the time I was naive and just topped it up every week but I'd now say the oil level sensor (if fitted) is on the blink.

I'd have expected this to throw a fault though ?

The Engine Speed Sensor (G28) is the most important sensor on the engine. Without it, the engine can't start or run, and will cut out if the signal from the sensor drops out.

Check the wiring to that sensor carefully, and if no problems are found, consider replacing the sensor.

Thanks Uwe.
My colleague has ordered a new sensor. Hopefully that is the cause of the problems. He just needs to find out where it's located on the engine :)

Any ideas on the Power Supply Relay fault - is that likely to be connected, or something completely different ?
