Car cut out... now car won't start!?

Hi people, basically i've had a problem with my Ibiza GTi Cupra Sport 16v.

Whilst crossing a runway (yes a runway!) I went to put my foot down and nothing happened. So, thinking for the 1st time in my life i'd pressed down on the brakes rather than the accelerator, (my brakes are terribly low at the minute) I tried again.... again, nothing happened. But all was still seemingly fine save for the small matter of no acceleration. Then I noticed the battery and oil warning lights came on and the car cut out, but carried on travelling. There was no noises, no seizures or anything. Nothing was on the road. I couldn't see any obvious damage to anything under the bonnet. My friend was able to push the car off the runway whilst laughing hysterically at me which obviously helped!

EDIT: It was the coil pack, can't think why I didn't think of it. Quick easy fix. Cheers guys.

I had a similar problem on a mini (i know, old school etc), which was caused by the fan belt being too loose, hence it wasnt driving the alternator and so the battery wasnt charging right. Its possible on cars to have voltage to just run but not to accelerate which takes a little more.

Id check the battery terminals, make sure they are tight/clean, and if you have a voltometer check you have 12 volts, its its like 6 or something then it will be either the battery or alternator. Although alternator would usually mean battery light coming on all the time when it was running.

Id check the distributor, take it off and squeeze it lightly, to check for any cracks, look at each of the four metal points see they are clean as they may have white powder on them, a sign of water, and also the black carbon rod in the middle should stick out a little and be smooth.

If thats ok, check all the leads from the distributor to the spark plugs, look for white deposits, this is a sign of arcing in the wet. And also do the same for the ht lead from the centre of the distributor to the coil. Carefully check the coil, any crack or slight heat scoring is a sign it will need replacing.

I had a similar problem with mine at the start of the year, i found the problem to be the Idle control valve on the inlet maifold.

My car is only the 8 valve, but i would assume that the 16 valver would have something like it?

Hope u get it sorted mate, i know the feeling when your pride and joy dies as mine is currently broken!

Does it crank over on the key? Is the battery charged? Is the alternator belt there? Have you checked the afformentioned? Did you run out of petrol?

Could be a fuel pump problem - had it on my clio 1.8 16v in the outside lane...just stopped pumping fuel

First things first make sure the fuel pumps running. It doesn't require taking anything off just turn on the ignition and you should here it buzzing away. For an engine to cut out straight away with no warning its either electrical (ecu), timing belt failure, engine failure,no fuel or no spark i'd say. Try the basics first though cos they don't cost you anything

Id go with this for a start.

see if it turns over with the starter

If it does and theres no life, check that theres a spark

if there is check to see if theres fuel getting to it

theyre the basics, check those and then get back to us
Do it in that order too, easiest first

Sound to me you have snaped your fan belt or your alternater is nakerd!if the belt snaped it would have run for a wile untill it drained the battary!any good luck at the garage and dont let them rob you!

Common as muck on these, I know as I've had a few go on me!

About £20+VAT from GSF for a cheapy, £35+VAT I think for a genuine.

yeh coil x3 from me, mine went and had the same problems as yours

I had exactly the same issues with my ecu getting soaked on my 16v when i first got it. Sealed it up good and it was fine.

Definately get that coilpack checked.
