Hi all,
Its Daivd here, I own a 2.0 16V GTI ibiza and having problems with the gear selection. Ever since the weekend when it grinded in 2nd gear i have been finding it hard to select all gears they seem to be all over the place. 1st is hard to get, 2nd slips out while driving 3rd 4th and 5th seem to be ok and reverse is hard to find but can get it. I know that the car has cable linkages so dont think that the problem is there. Has anyone heard of this before if so please help!!! Hopefully dont need new box car only has 60,000.

cheers David

your linkages have gone mate, i had this problem, 1st disappeared and all the gears moved over one to the left

the bracket isnt expensive, takes quite a while to do though, have to get the whole lot lined up again

you might need a transmission specialist to line them up, i think the ABF engine'd ibizas are cable change which is better than the Rod change that the 1.8 16v Ibizas have (like mine :S)

This sounds a lot like what im experiencing. However with me i could select every gear fine when the engine was turned off, so i ruled out the linkages. Try putting it into first, and look out if the car wants to creep forward (mine did this). So im suspecting clutch now. Hope this helps.

Good Luck

it sounds like the linkage to me, mine went and lost 2nd and 4th, they just crunched when you tried to get them. i think it depends which part of the linkage has given up as to what gears are lost. I could select them all fine with the engine off

I'm having something similar, cable box in my TDI. I cant select any gears now till the engine has warmed up, and then it's fine! I can select all gears when the engine is at normal opperating temp! Any ideas?

Is it in your polo?

polo front end is vastly different to Ibizas

sounds like internal gearbox problems, synchros probably

Crikey - never heard anyone say that before. I've had a 2 sets of cables and a recon gearbox so far on my 02A. And its never felt anywhere near as good as a decent rod change... time for a signature change!

Yeah I'm not a fan of the box in my valver - seems to have the longest throw in the world and not always the smoothest of changes

when i lost 2nd and 4th it was the shift cable that controls the forward and backward selection, when you go for 2nd and 4th thers a telescopic bit that comes out at the box end (a tube with a smaller bit of tube inside, you have to pull a little rubber gaitor back to see it) and the smaller bit had broken which let the cable bend as it went forward (to 2nd and 4th)

yes it's the polo, but being the saloon, it's got more in comon with a cordoba than the vw polo! I'm going to change the oil first as it only happens when cold, will update when done

O2A is terrible change, the O2O rod change is alot firmer and solid. ive had both in ibizas and both in mk2 Golfs... if i thought the O2O could of held 200bhp safely id of kept it but ive been told they are only rated to around 170bhp?

its intresting that on old mk2 golfs at least, both types of box bolt straight up to either 8v Gti and 16v Gti.

its one of those i think... some people run them forever and dont seem to have a problem, others seem to go through them. the O2A's seem to generally cope with higher power better.

if the O2A decides enoughs enough, i will be fitting the O2O back on anywhos lol.
