Well, I now have my Leon Cupra R, and would like to hang on to it for as long as possible.

I was considering the Clifford BlackJax anti-hijacking device as one of my list of "things I might buy".

Anyone any experience of it, or comments on whether I should bother or not?

Thanks muchly.

Any ideas on how much / where from ?

I have phones a couple of fitters and theyare quoting prices of between £200 and £250 fitted.

I'm sure I heard prices cheaper than that.......

Anyone?

Be aware that if you have a blackjax fitted, it voids the thatcham approval of the alarm/immobiliser system. It's because it is an uncontrolled immobiliser unit which is the reason why Thatcham won't approve it.

I heard the same about the Cat 1 status and, on the advice of a friend, had a skim through Scoobynet who have been discussing this since the year dot.

The way I understand it is:

If you have a Clifford alarm (Cat 1) which has Blackjax as part of the system, activating the BlackJax will invalidate the Cat 1 status. As long as you disable the BlackJax it is still Cat 1.

HOWEVER........

If you have a Cat 1 alarm already fitted (which is not a Clifford) as the Leon R comes with as standard, and then fit a 'stand-alone' Blackjax (not conneced to the alarm) then the Cat 1 status still remains, as the alarm has not been altered.

Unless anyone knows different... :dunno:

I shall ring my insurance company and find out their take on it - getting their response in writing - before I go ahead.

This is the reply that I have just receieved from Clifford themselves on the question whether blackjax is insurance approved, it's not all bad:

That is correct, Thatcham do not want to associated with a system that
immobilises a vehicle in motion. It is a red tape issue, they will allow a blackjax 4 as an add on though. Thatcham will not know that you have the feature is turned on and if your car is stolen then the feature will save your car. The decision is yours.

Just a point on this clifford blackjax:

Used to work with a geeza who had a rather tasty Scooby Impreza-
problem was he lived in Salford which ain't the best area for
having a nice motor and such....

So a month after purchasing this device on his scooby and presuming
that all would be well one night on the way home from work he pulled
up at some Traffic lights minding his own business.

At this point a brigade of rather aggresive hudlums with
ski-masks and balaclava's on, proceeded to force him out of the car
and take his pride'n'joy for a unwelcomed test drive.

My friend thought "Oh its got Black jax"-no problems-and proceeded
to get out pronto with no worries and tittered to himself in the
knowledge the car would come to a standstill 20 seconds down the road.

At this my mate phoned the police as you do and then walked around
the corner which his car had just turned expecting to see some
rather puzzled looking gents and his motor.

Yup-there was his car...............................................

An Insurance Answer

Just got off the phone from my insurers (Direct Line)

They said "fine sir, it will not make any difference to your policy", meaning:

1) They will still cover me and not invalidate the Thatcham Cat 1 status of the standard-fit Leon R alarm.

2) They won't knock anything off my premium. B4$tards !

Time to shop around for a decent fitter, I think.
