could you give a the name and where i could get it from.
i would like a good oil as i'm thinking of a remap after i've paid for the service.
the garage want to put in comma pd oil in but i always thought that comma was cheap **** oil.

Simplified.

VW505.01 - 5w 40 oil for bog standard services.

VW506.01 - 0w 30 for extended service intervals (used in other VAG group cars but not in Seat except for the Ibiza Cupra 160 TDI)

Both the above have now been superceded by VW504/507 5w 30 in the other VAG group service schedules.

So for the best oil I'd be using Gulf VW504/507 - 5w 30 (which I do). I buy it locally from a mate in the trade, but you can buy it from here.

So although my manual says to use spec 505.01 (which seems to be 5w-40) I should use 5w-30 spec vw 507? Car is a 2006 leon 2.0 tdi reference sport.

If it was me I'd use the best oil possible. The cost of VW505.01 5w-40 is usually up there with the cost of VW504/507 5w 30 anyway, and sometimes it's cheaper to buy the better oil. VAG oil specs are backwards compatible usually, so VW504/507 also covers VW505.01.

We've got some 5w-30 in the garage. On the label it says it complies to vw spec 507 but not spec 505.01. how can that be right if 507 superceeds 505?

Does it say it "Does not meet VW505.01" or is it just not mentioned that it does meet VW505.01? Be helpful to know exactly what the oil is, and also to quote exact oil specs. VW505 is not the same as VW505.01

Ok, I've had a better look at the bottle in the light. It's Halfords own brand oil fully synthetic 5w-30 for petrol and diesel. It reads "Meets requirements of VW/Audi 504.00 and 507.00 Long Life Service. *Supersedes all previous VW specs except VW 505.01 found in Halfords 5W/40 Fully Synthetic Diesel Oil"

Well, that's Halfords for ya. As far as known, VW specs are backwards compatible. VW PD engines now use VW504/507 5w 30 for all service schedules regardless, so it should be compatible. Maybe Ha;fords just don't understand the way things work. Most likely I would think. Still, I'll not use Halfords own brand oil in an engine, not when brand name oils are cheaper.

Castrol 505.00 for older Tdi's.

Hi Just been to Tesco's for diesel fill up. Castrol diesel oil is £4.78 for two litres, yet they are selling 4 litre bottle for £16.78. Get a bargain while you can!

Hi, Castrol Diesel I've always used it for the past 70k miles?Meets VW spec 505-00 as specified in my cars owners manual. 2002 Tdi Toledo ASV engine. Now on 120k miles and running sweet as nut, change oil at 8k miles with Pela pump. At £9 for an oil change could do it at 5k and still be in pocket.I change the filter at 16k. Have read on American Tdi site filters are good for 30k miles, they do a lot of there own oil analysis so I think they may have better info than we can get hold of?

The ASV engine is a rotary injection pump TDI engine. Other PD TDI engines require VW505.01 oil as a minimum to properly lubricate the camshaft and injector lobes. Just because it says "Diesel" on the bottle doesn't mean it's suitable for all diesel engines.

If you post the detail in your post rather than in the post title, then people will see it.

Not only that, if someone quotes your post then your title is lost. :) Just keeping the details clear and precise, as it's easy for people to get confused even when they're given the right info. Give 'em the wrong info and they've no chance.

Has anyone seen a New Mobil 1 Producted on the Market called Mobil 1 0W/40 "Like New" or something to that effect. The container (which I saw in Halfords & only had one 1!) didn't give much info but it claims to "Keep engine like new" for those high mileage cars

I have a 110BHP TDI (non PD) that is approaching 100K miles & for the previous 60K miles I've used Mobil 1 0W/40 Diesel and it has done well..........especially protecting the Turbo on those cold winter start ups when I've been on Emergency call.

As I say the product was something like "Like New Mobil 1 0W/40"
