I used Autoglymm engine machine cleaner, Gunk is pretty goo too. I found its best if you dont let it dry on the plastics as it tends to leave a staining, that means you have to do it again.
To make this more difficult its best to do it with the engine warm!
Have the hose close by, of fill up a watering can with a rose on the end and keep it damp.
You don't want to pressure wash the altenator or any of your eletricals and keep away from away from the right side of the cylinder head as you may pop out the half moon gasket for the cam chain tensioner which would be a disaster and alot of fannying about to put right. Also the flywheel gromit on the gearbox could come out but it just pushes back on. Ive cleaned mine with a pressue washer on numerous occations without any adverse symptoms.
Gunk is pretty much the mutts, use it on my mk1 golfs, and theyve really collected some shart. Just get a paint bursh to apply it and brush off...simples
heres one for you. i clean my trainers with toothpaste with added whitener. the come out like new the whitener has a soft bleaching agent, and they smell nice too
