could it not slip when the light flashes? If the light isnt flashing at the time of taking a reading of 14.4v then there isnt anything wrong at that time. An alternator belt won't slip constantly if it is slipping.

Not saying that that is what is wrong, but couldnt it be a possibility? Or if there is a fault with the auto-tensioner?

And does it flash when anything specific is turned on ie heated rear screen or flicking the wipers?

What is the criteria for the light coming on?

Pretty sure the belt isn't slipping because it wouldn't stay at a steady 14.5v. The light was on for a while whilst the meter didn't change.

Alternator replaced for £215. Pricey, but seems to have cured the problem.

The car is now running half decently!
