I had a similar situation with my car, was the water pump.

I had the cambelt, water pump and thermostat done at the same time and the car is perfect now.

The Cars not moved since Saturday Lee. I topped the water up as it was just under the minimum mark. I had just give it a couple of mile run prior to this to see if it stil had the issue. I then ran it at idle with the expansion top off to see if it was an air lock. The water started to bubble to the top of the tank, then it settled down. I then sat in my car and raised the revs to about the 2000 mark with the expansion top back on the tank and the temp went up to about 100, so I turned it off. The next day, I checked the expansion bottle and it was dry!. No visable leakage on the drive either.

If you had an airlock yes the water would have disappeared, but seeing as it sat and then was dry the following day..maybe the fairies drank it ;)

Just got off the phone to the Mechanic I use.

He has done a pressure test and its all ok so he is pretty sure it is indeed the Water Pump and not the head gasket. What he is going to do is change the water pump and the thermostat for me :) That with new cambelt kit and labour comes in at £250 all in. Hopefully I will have her back soon!

Can some one tell me exactly where the thermostat (not the temp sensor) is located in the 20VT LC engine?

Sy I actually found a guide for changing the thermostat when I was looking for an answer on here. Here it is http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=1910667

Well it was confirmed to be the Water Pump that was the issue. He showed me that the impeller had broke in half! Its runing well again now :) Cam belt done at same time too, so saves me doinf it later this year :)

Thanks so much for the help as always :)
