OK I took the turbo actuator off today and the turbo vanes are free and easy to move with no noise so I gues that rules out the turbo. :D
I have noticed that there is soot around the exhaust flexy pipe. I think that might be where my noise is from? I might get a de cat front pipe. I think I was being a bit paranoid thinking it was the turbo.

Update on my repairs

In case anyone ever has similar issues I thought I would post an update. My lack of power at top end was caused by a faulty coolant temp sender! I replaced the seemingly good one for a new one and WOW it goes like f@@k now, the difference in performance is amazing. Best £14 I ever spent! As for the old one, no faults showed in VAG COM and the sensor tested good for resistance, I mean I connected it to a meter and warmed/cooled and the resistance change was smooth and accurate? No idea why it has made such a difference? It was a black plastic sensor that came out and a green one that went in, got the tips from the forum so thank you. :funk:

It is truly awesome, I really can't believe the power difference ! Noise is still there until I get my hands on a good decat pipe assuming it is the exhaust flexy thats causing it. My missus has much better hearing than me. She say's it is not under the bonnet but further back in the centre? A metal grating sound, if it wasn't raining so much I would be under there now looking. A Miltek decat is a bit pricey and too wide to fit the old sys. I don't really wanna spend too much more money! so would be happy with a straight bolt on replacement, front pipe only.

I heard that it is common so did have a quick look, was on my drive in sub zero temp in the dark with a small torch tho, lol. Will have a good look at all the exhaust as soon as I can get back under there, I hate rain! It would be so simple if its a bracket or just rubbing on somewhere. Cheers for the info.

I'd check the centre mounting hasn't snapped off the mid pipe, very common.

snap and squeek like old bed springs!

ths performance sell a decat pipe in stainless steel for about £130 delivered.

push the back box to see if it makes the noise.

they are easily fixed - either with a jubilee clip or welding.

OK £650 later I have a new camshaft, followers, bearings and seals fitted, engine flushed and oil changed. All seems well so far! :D

I have a 04 Leon cupra TDI 150 and need the same job done. any heads up on where to get the parts from.

i got a quote from seat dealers of 2500 :-o but they added loads of other things to the parts. can no way afford that!

I can see why thats extortion! When I researched the job Euro Car Parts or*www.vwenginerecon.co.uk seemed best. I found a cheap one on ebay so I asked a customer who had left feedback, he said his snapped during installation! I would personaly steer clear of ebay although he may have torqued it down unevenly, who knows. For me going to a VAG specialist seemed the best option. I have no idea where his parts came from, he assured me they are OE spec and the old one came back in a Euro CP bag. Its not a big job he charged me 3 hours labour, much less hassle than doing it on my drive! If you can find a specialist near you that is what I would reccomend, cars like ours are too old for dealer prices!

Ye i have seen the one's on ebay £195. I guess going to a VAG specialist would give me some peace of mind. Thanks

Yep definately you won't have to take the responsibility of it going wrong or buy the tools. Oh and get the water pump and cam belt done too. Just make sure you get a reccomendation for whoever you take it to. Out of interest what MPG do you get from your car?

Get no better than 40MPG if im driving local roads (probably because my foots always on the floor) and 50+ easily on the Motorway... car needs a service as well so MPG always the best just after a service.

good engineering places can supply the cam or you can search online i.e ebay.

the cam locking tool will be strong enough for you to crack the pully bolt off then locktight it back on after.

you can buy a holding tool but you might not need it, we have one but the pin is normally good enough.

I've got to do my cam after having a look under my cover yesterday. Heard a random tappet noise so thought I'd have a look and found 3 lobes/lifter tops wearing. Not totally knackered but they are on their way so am going to replace the lot before its too late.

Question to MJ, do you use the special puller to get the cam pulley off or something else maybe?

Any other handy hints appreciated.

It's an easy and straight forward job mate, no problems should occur really.

With regards to the puller - just use a drift and a hammer :D

There is one available but I've never needed to use it.

Thought as much! Thats what I thought of doing anyway but you would of known if it wasn't advisable.

Do you know much about the steel cam kits you can get? Theres a company called Redmans Engines that sell a steel cam with the upgraded black followers. Price seems a bit cheap but if anyone has any experience of them I would like to hear it.

This is the listing here.

Thanks again MJ.
