thought i would put a guide up on how to change a clutch master cylinder as apparantly it is a common fault!

firstly i would only recommend that a mechanically known person does this as it is a trickey job! to diagnose if your clutch master cylinder has gone mine had a sticking clutch pedal and had a fluctuating clutch biting point!

here is what a sachs master cylinder looks like

step1

you need to remove the
battery
airbox
airbox inlet pipe
strut brace (if you have 1)
dash trim under steering wheel

and on top of the gearbox area you will see a slave cylinder and a bleeding nipple like this

step2

crack the bleed nipple off with bleeding tool attached and remove brake fluid resevoir cap

step3

you need to clamp the upper pipe that runs directly from the brake resevoir to the mastercylinder or you will get brake fluid everywhere and paintworkwill be WRECKED!

step 4

unclip the white clip (on end of rod on right) as seen on VV this VV picture from the top of the clutch pedal in the footwell using a pick tool or a flathead screwdriver

step 5

undo the two 13mm bolts on inside of bulkhead from the footwell VVV

step 6

then you will also need to remove the spring that can be seen at the top of this picture ^^^^ which is done bu removing the 13mm bolt and nut that the clutch pedal swivels on then completly remove the pedal and spring

you can now vertually wiggle the master cylinder around now but there is two pipes connected in the engine bay this is the space you have to work with

step 7

you need to get a LONG flathead screw diver and prise the clip off the top hose and unclip the lower hose this is obviously harder than it sounds!

when this is done

step 8

remove the broken master cylinder and bolt new master cylinder in via the two 13mm nuts but dont forget a bit of dum dum paste or rubber to put between the master cylinder and bulkhead to stop water leaking into the footwell! then clip the white clip into the clutch pedal shaft and place return spring back into place

step 9

put the pivvoting 13mm bolt and nut into the clutch pedal (this is trickey as your fighting a thick strong spring but it is possible!!!

step 10

replace dashtrims

step 11

bleed the sytem using the slave cylinder on the gearbox under bonnet

step 12

replace airbox, strut brace, battery and intake ect

job done :) took me 2 hours in total very knuckle scraping job!

thanks for info, almost sorted clutch working nice & smooth again! took car fpr long spiun plenty gear change no probs. all gears. Clutch switch plastic thread is stripped so very loose & pops out, are they meant to have a backing nut, or do they just screw into metal plate. When clutch released pushs switch out. Also got EMC fault come up after hour driving, no other warning is this because clutch switch not in place properly? getting there slowly appreciate any info!!
