It is possible, but you need another in line quad-lock connector to disable the speed signal.

They are available from all good E-auction sites!

Search for this auction 260757406925 on fleabay and it'll give you all the details.
It's an easy job to do, just a pain trying to lose the additional wiring behind the head unit.

The safe wire, if it works the same as in aftermarket units which it probably does, is there to prevent the HU from going into the settings mode or playing DVD whilst you're driving (which can be dangerous and is also illegal in most countries).

There is an easy way to bypass that but I couldn't tell you it on a public forum. :D

Hi all, quick question on types.....

Going to plunge for an MFD3 next week, which version should I get? I see plenty of VW Version Bs and Cs on ebay (just within my budget) and newer version Cs with LED. I've also previously seen an original SEAT (version A?) for sale which is cheaper than the VWs, but doesn't have the SD card slot.
I have a MY06 SEAT Leon, without MP3 stereo and with only the small dot matrix MFD on the dash.
Which one should I get? SEAT version A; VW version B or C?
Which will work best with my car? Will it need recoding/Gateway changed etc? (P.s. what's a gateway? I suspect having a MY06 my gateway will be a problem?)
Which will best allow a BT module to be fitted to the car later?
Which will best transplant to a Facelift Leon in about 2 years time?
Can video in motion be activated on version A? Is the SD card slot (or lack of same) a big deal?
Battery drain issues?

Thanks in advance,
Roy

Hi again!

I went and bought a VW RNS510 from the bay. Advertised as,
"Version B
SW Version: 2760
Will fit cars with old CAN Gateways and will not cause battery drain.
Video in motion activated.
"

Just spent the afternoon and evening installing it. Big up to DanGB for writing the guide in the first place. It actually is that easy!

The hardest part was removing the original radio in the first place. Took over 40 mins of a struggle, despite the fact I did 2 dry runs last week. (first took nearly an hour:(, the second 5 mins!:funk:)

5 nervous minutes with the dremel sorted the plastic bit at the bottom, I also cut out the bit at the back just to give me more room for the antenna connectors, although I'm not sure I needed it, as I was able to push the unit all the way back in as soon as the lower cut-out for SD card slot was made.

Powered it all up, and thankfully it worked. After about 5 mins it found it's location. I was going to put the gps antenna on the dash-under the windscreen- in front of the climate control sensor, where it showed a 5 sat reception. Put it under the dash on top of the air vent duct and it showed a 6 sat reception! 3 small bits of insulation tape secured it in place on the duct- out of sight! Put the aircon unit back in place (it's not necessary to remove it, but is does give more room to work with) and connected up the unit, and went for a spin.

Steering wheel functions all work, CD sound seems improved. Nav unit works fine. I ordered the fakra 1 into 2 antenna adapter from ebay but that hasn't arrived yet, so for now I have no radio, haven't tried the DVD yet either. Will go for a spin tomorrow and pick up a couple of SD cards to load my music. Still waiting on the local dealer to get the fascia plate. Tomorrow will also hopefully confirm the battery drain claim!

Thanks again Dan!

Roy

It was that easy! Well, getting the rns510 in was anyway....
As I said, the hardest part was getting the old head unit out. One clip refused to budge for about 25 mins.

I did take my time, but apart from the cut for SD card (not necessary if you get a SEAT unit) it was a straightforward plug'n'play. No arsing around with safe wires, quadlock pins or VAG-COM. Pull out old unit, disconnect quadlock and antenna; connect up quadlock, GPS antenna and radio antenna via Fakra 1-into-2 adapter, push new unit in. Screw in place and fit fascia. Simples!
I did make more work for myself by putting the climate control panel back in when the air ducts were not clipped back on it properly...!

Have now got the antenna adapter and fascia trim fitted. It's a superb bit of kit, even just for the mp3 and DVD functionality, never mind sat-nav.

Hi folks,

Just about ready to buy one of the Seat units for my 2006 TDi Sport but I have a few questions.

I want iPod functionality and was going to buy the Dension GW16VC1 as well. Will the RNS510 and the Dension work together ok? Will the track names show up on the RNS510 or only on the large MFD display? (I have Bluetooth).

What is the latest firmware for the RNS510?

I also understand that there is the clock offset issue and that there is currently no solution, not even changing the CAN gateway. Is this correct?

Last but not least, I read somewhere on this forum that someone couldn't get the RNS510 to display on the MFD until he/she had coded the CAN gateway module with VAG-COM (BAP option was unchecked).

After they coded and rebooted the RNS510 they knew it worked as the clock moved. Now, if I installed a RNS510 and didnt code it for the large MFD, I would keep my clock but would the RNS510 still work OK without accessing the MFD?

I've probably posted a lot of rubbish but cheers for reading!

AFAIK the clock issue won't be an issue if you install a SEAT unit.
I only have the small MFD so it didn't affect me anyway.

Dunno about the Ipod thingy (only have an ipod shuffle myself) but with 30gb of hard drive there is more than enough space for your music (have loaded up about 3.3gb on my hd and have another 1.6 on the SD card, and still haven't got anyway near half way through the music yet...)

SEAT units are only version A, Skoda's are A, B, C, VW's are A, B, C and now D, so firmware updates are dependent on version of unit. You can't get an A unit up to the level of a D, for example, amongst other things the A does not have the SD card slot and some have turned A units into £500 bricks when trying to upgrade to firmware that includes the SD card reader.
But then my B version seems to have all bases covered.

VWnavi.com has a lot of help. Check it out, but bear in mind it's a quieter forum so you may not get an answer for a day or so.

Thanks for getting back to me!

I'll def be getting a SEAT unit. I've read so many comments regarding the clock offset issue. I was off the the understanding that even with a SEAT unit I will have this problem. Can anyone clear this up?

Fair enough, does anyone else know if the Dension unit integrates properly with the SEAT version of the RNS510?

Cheers! That clears the model issue up!

I've been on vwnavi alot, I just find that there is very little discussion on the SEAT RNS510 (and rightly so, it's a VW forum)

I also wondered if i'd be able to load the new V7 maps on a SEAT version A unit. Would this give me full postcode search functionality or is this feature also firmware dependant?

Thanks

Hey guys,

I finally fitted my RNS510 and MDI kit with no problems. The airbag behind the glovebox was a bit problematic but I got there in the end.

I am having some problems that I hope you can help me with:

I have bluetooth in the car and I used to get the phone menu appear on the large MFD. Now i've used VCDS to code phone preperation (0000422) in 77 - Telephone. I can press the voice control button and use that but cant get my phone book to appear on the MFD using the phone button.

Also the skip track isnt working, only the volume buttons. I've had a look at the steering wheel module in VCDS and it appears to be coded correctly, however I do think it's a MFSW issue.

Can anyone help? I've got an 06 Sport just like DanGB! How did you get it working mate?

Cheers
