Exhaust & brackets rusted & brakes worn

Had car in today for its ABS unit repair and two winter tyres on the front to replace the nearly worn out summer tyres.

Got a phone call to say all the work was done but i apparently, a bracket holding the exhaust on is badly corroded and so too is the back silencer. Surprise surprise, the bracket is classed as part of the exhaust, and not the bodywork so is a non-corrosion-warrantable item.

Add to this "need" to get all 4 sets of pads and disks replaced as they are all 80% worn.
Again, at the service at my local Bosch garage the front was 60% and the back 50% - so ive no idea whom to believe

Also i dont think there is a "need" to change the brakes - the wear warning light isn't even on and you cant see the wear indicator on the pads yet which according to the handbook is at 95% and 90% respectively - which to me is when you change the things - they don't work any less well until you have metal on metal, that's how they are designed to work so you change just before that! They also say the disks are pitted and ive had a close look and feel and cant see or feel any pitting.

As far as costs, ive just spent £690 today on the ABS unit, tyres and window wipers.

If i get them done, the brakes are nearly £450 and the exhaust would be about £350 from them. I cant believe i need a new exhaust box (yes - price not for a whole exhaust, just the box and fitting) and mystery bracket for a car which is only 3yr and 6mo old! The brakes are even an odd one given the difference in readings.

If you changed everything just after 3/4 of its life was expended you would never be out of shops!

Whats the thought's on this?

if it went to stealers they will try it on they all do the brkt shouldnt be anything to worry about if its only 3 year old and the exhaust either, the silencer will no doubt have a double skin and the outer will be corroded a bit and nothing really to worry about mine is 4 years old and is corroded aswell but i wont **** myself about that till it drops off lol, and brakes are really up to you what ever you feel safe running them down to did you check the rear side of disc as i find its that side that gets shabbier than the side you can see but there again what ever you feel safe with them you have to drive it at the end of the day

It was stealers, was getting an out of warranty contribution towards an ABS unit repair, also they were cheapest for winter tyres locally by several £10's of pounds.

They give you all the scare tactics on the phone, if i was a little old lady i would be selling my silver and getting it done!

Im going to try and borrow some ramps and have a look at things under there, i didnt know they were double skinned, suppose it help keep the temperature low of the outside skin.

On the brakes, the car stops like it hit a wall and i dont see why they should be less effective at 80% as they are at 20%. I beleive the wear warning lights come on at 90+% so to me thats when they should be changed.

What bugs me is stealer saying they are 80% but 2 months ago the local garage said 50% and 60% (back and front). At the same time, the local garage said i had 5mm on my rear tyres when it was actually to the canvas.

Dont know who to trust now! Going to try another garage for a 3rd deciding vote i think.

I do have some vernier gauges so perhaps i could measure the material thickness's but that probs means stripping down the brakes.

Hi, the standard twin-oem one. Dual or single would be nice :) For the price the dealer want for a back box i would probs be better getting a whole new after market exhaust.

I plan to sell in March time anyway so i dont want to be doing too much but still keep it saleable!

Im really disappointed, i honestly wanted to buy a Cupra R next year and i said so in an email to the garage last week when hinting towards my courtesy car and that's despite one or two issues.

Something rusting on a car only 6 months out of warranty is not inspiring!

exhaust parts do tend to rust up quick because they get warm i really should know why this happens seen as tho im a fab welder but i dont i just know it happens but its not going to fall to bits after 3 years and with your pads they are usually around 12-15mm of compound when brand new so there is a bit of a guide for you if you have a good look at them

My exhaust is pretty badly corroded but it's double-skinned. Mentioned it to the dealers and they said don't worry about it, leave it until the whole of the outer skin is rusted and it will eventually just come off! Then when the inner skin starts to rust you have to replace it then.

As dazveesey said the tailbox will be double skinned ,so i would doubt if it is knackered yet, as for the bracket im sure if you nipped in to wallace performance next door they would weld a new hanger on to you as they fabricate custom exhausts,i have a tailbox in my shed, but i am just going to hang on to it just incase i take off the cupra r one when i decide to sell the car.might be worth asking them there opinion on your discs aswell just incase the stealers are trying it on with you.
