Hello, I am experiencing alot of road noise and whining with my tyres, only happens on some road surfaces and can be unbearable at times on certain roads! Anyone else experience this?? I'm running the original Bridgestone turanza er300 16" tyres?

Mine was a bit noisy with the Turanzas on, but if you're getting an occasional whine too (as well as rumbling) I reckon the problem will be your wheel bearings. I've heard people having to change them with mileage as little as 40-50k.

Only does it on certain bits of road, for example it does it on this one bit of road between where I live and the next town, always on the same stretch?? Had major service yesterday and seat only picked up that exhaust casing was rusting through, had all other components checked so bearings should be ok. Car has only done 34k?

I reckon its just road noise with your car tbh. Ibizas are very noisey cars. The texture of the road surface can have a detrimental effect whether you can hold a conversation or not in your car! Only ways about it are to strip the car and fully sound deaden it or get rid!

If it's unbearable, I wonder if you've bought the wrong car. No amount of tyre make/suspension changing/sound deadening will be completely successful judging by by some of the people harping on about the issue on this forum.

My mate's got a standard Golf Mk4 with a PD130 in it and he loves it. I've been in it and it rides nice and quietly on its standard tyres (195/55/15). It doesn't feel very sporty, more of a wallowy family/older persons car - if that's not too unkind.

Have to disagree with that. The polo is a quiet and comfortable car and doesn't have a jarring ride and that's exactly the same car underneath as the ibiza - same goes for the fabia. It's just hard to find aftermarket suspension kits that focus' on good ride comfort (to the standard that would be expected from the factory) and has decent handling as well. The sound proofing issue is Seat penny pinching and also perhaps making the car not quite a 'solid' feeling as the polo so that it does'nt overshaddow it, therefore taking a share of their sales.

So would you reccommend installing sound deadening throughout the car?? If so how easy is this to do??

Yes i would. Basically strip out the entire interior (dash can be left in) and deaden the entire floor with something like Silent Coat 2mm sheets then on top of that block the sound with closed cell foam and then mass loaded vinyl. Deaden all the door skins and behind the quarter panels, boot etc.

Thanks for that rf860. I'm sure you are aware Seat as a brand are/were (when they brought out the Mk4) positioned within VAG with a "youthful sporty profile". I suppose that's why we have TDi Sport, FR - Formula Racing and Cupra - Cup Racing models of Ibiza. I presume Seat produced those Mk4 models with that in mind to appeal to young at heart drivers who like a youthful sporty drive. I also guess Seat and VW had focus groups discussing the Mk4's suspension/handling/noise and comfort aspects and tried to differentiate from the Polo and Fabia in the ride/sound quality of their models while keeping true to the youthful sporty drive tenet. Agreed regarding the Mk4's sound proofing, that might be penny pinching, but how do we know it wasn't decided the extra noise contributed to the aesthetic of the car? BTW I am no newbie to VAG group cars having owned five with differing performance levels over the years - a Golf, a Jetta, two Ibiza's and a Polo. The Price/Comfort/Handling factors are a compromise are they not which in my FR's case I am more than happy with. This FR I have now is the best of the bunch by a long way in my opinion.

If people aren't happy with the ride/noise of their cars why did they buy them in the first place? I suppose that is the issue we disagree on and what I plainly don't understand. Secondly if people aren't happy with after market suspension manufacturers products, complain to them, or buy and fit OE Polo/Fabia suspension units. There is a third option... Some folks don't seem to understand the purpose of a test drive or have the ability to sell the car they're unhappy with and buy a car they do like. Again, that's what I don't understand, why folk spend thousand's on a car then say ooo my suspension and tyres are unbearable. It's like someone buying a Rolls Royce and then complaining it doesn't drive like a Caterham. Why buy it in the first place is my question.

I agree with rf860!! I love my mk4, the tyre noise etc just gets on my nerves sometimes and I was just wondering if there was a way to make it a bit quiter that's all! I couldn't get rid of it cos I like it too much, drives and handles great and looks like a beast!!

A good amount of DYNAMAT extreme or similar applied to the interior panels and floorpan will help.

Also - stuffing the rear quaters of the three door with loft insulation helps to reduce road noise echo.

Apologies, I guess I got the wrong end of the stick when you said 'unbearable at times'.
As rf860 says strip yer interior and sound proof it - shouldn't take too long. My additional suggestion? perhaps some deeper 205/50/16's might help too. I believe it makes the speedo more accurate. Not sure if it's a good idea to put 205/55's on though but I think it'd be a quieter ride.
