It just seems like at road legal speeds in 6th gear the car tends to struggle, where as in 5th the car is much smoother and i also notice more mpg from fifth
Mine is a PD. I don't think it's that the engine is laboured really, plenty of torque there, I think it's just that sufficient heat to enable passive regeneration is not produced at the lower revs.
5th gear is probably producing more torque at 70 than 6th and hence the engine has less work to do, even though only slightly.
