It sounds like 6th is out of the power band for mototrway speeds so you need more throttle to maintain your speed and your mpg drops.

agree with the above just shy of 2k and no issues cruising engine certainly doesn't feel laboured

@ /dev/null is yours a PD or a CR this could be why we see differences

Mine is a PD. I don't think it's that the engine is laboured really, plenty of torque there, I think it's just that sufficient heat to enable passive regeneration is not produced at the lower revs.
5th gear is probably producing more torque at 70 than 6th and hence the engine has less work to do, even though only slightly.
