Door lock nightmare

Hi all, I haven’t posted for ages since I sold my 1p Cupra a while back but I need some help now with my parent’s 1n.

So the story goes as follows:

Remote key fob stopped working, changed the battery but still no good, the red light didn’t flash when you press the lock/unlock button either. So came to the conclusion that the fob was bust. Told parents to use the key for locking/unlocking while I got hold of a second hand working fob. I had done a lot of work making spare keys/fobs for the 1p, swapping transponders etc so sort of knew what I was doing.

Anyway before I had chance to pair the new fob the drivers door lock barrel broke – the key just spins round and round in the lock (the door was locked so we had to get in through the boot, climb over and press the unlock button on the drivers door – which incidentally still works perfectly). I’ve had the door card off and the accessory mounting plate in the door but still couldn’t see how on earth to get to the lock itself.

So now I have a nightmare situation where they cannot lock the car at all. Can’t use the key because it just spins in the lock. The old fob is bust (original problem) and I can’t pair the new fob because all of the pairing instructions involve locking and unlocking the car from the driver’s door (which obviously I can’t do).

So I’m stuck. Any bright ideas that don’t involve spending a lot of cash – its a 51 plate 1.4 S so not worth very much but parents have had it from new and its only done 32k miles! (Yes you did read that right) so its worth a lot more to them than its actual value.

They aren’t that fussed about the lock if I could get the remote to work. I have a horrible feeling that the only way I’m going to achieve that however is to change the drivers door lock first.

Any thoughts on a way forwards would very much be appreciated.

Cheers

Alex.

If its just spinning around it (the lock) sounds like the bar that attaches it to the door catch lock mechanism has come unclipped, either that or replace the lock itself, which i cant see being expensive? surely you can just put the old barrel off yours onto a replacement lock mechanism if it turns out the mechanism thats **** itself, its not the barrel itself that unlocks the door, thats just the bit that turns the lock mechanism to open, so either the connecting rod to the latch/lock mechanism has come off or the latch/lock mech is knackered, either way seems a simple fix :)
