Sorry if this has been covered before. I have a Mk 2 which has been SORN'd for last 18 months. Prior to this it was used as fast road / track car (full cage, harnesses, seats etc.) The time has now come to try and finish the project for tarmac stage rallying. Does anyone have a tarmac stage car, if so what suspension do you run and who supplies it? I know there are many coilover kits available but are any 'off the shelf' kits suitable for this type of abuse? Also, will a mk 3 golf omp sump guard fit? Any other info on tarmac rally spec much appreciated.

Im currently in the process of building a tarmac ibiza, its been a long process but am getting there.
I was working on the sumpguard at the weekend and will be fitting an ex works mk2 golf item. not sure about the mk3 golf sumpguard as i dont have access to one. What I have noted is the mk2 golf one fits the main subframe (steering rack and anti roll bar, wishbone one) fine. Gives reasonable clearance to the sump and gearbox, however is 33mm to low for the engine mount subframe. The power steering pipe that traverses the subframe may prove to be an issue and may need moved. My plan is to either make an additional subframe to bolt to the standard mounts on each chassis leg or modify the standard subframe using vertical box supports.
As for suspension im running proflex units in the rear and will be upgrading the front GpA Bilsteins in the near future to proflex once funds allow.
I used avos on a couple of golfs I have rallied and found them to be affordable as they can be repaired and rebuilt.

Thanks for the info, I think I will need to get myself a mk2 golf sump guard and have it altered to suit. Unfortunately I am not much use on the fabrication side (luckily I have a good friend who is) :D. I think avo is top of the list for me really due to current budget, yours is a lovely looking car when is she planned to be finished? As for pics of mine I have a few from an old trackday a few years back, but if I can't find these I will post some once it's back on the raod (hopefully over the next few weeks)

Looking at the mk3 golf rally car there are many differing types of sumpguard and subframes out there. I see OMP make one but I have not seen any drawings off it. Perhaps a bit of research down that line might throw a bit of light on it!

I was hoping to have it finished way back in 2010 but the recession hit and it had to be put on hold.
Its only now im able to start doing bits to it. I would really love it to be ready for testing early January 2013 but I dont know if thats realistic.

I used the AVO units in my mk1 and mk2 golfs and always found the guys there to be really helpfull. They would valve them to my specs for irish tar with no issues. Bilstein are a very good option if you can get the proper motorsport units and inserts. You could always look at modifying the back end to go with the escort mk2 gp4 style shocks. Its not a bad conversion. It was what was in my ex works mk2 golf.
