newb to the leon fr tdi...

alright guys, well im not a newb in sense as ive had a cupra r before but now ive just purchased a 55 plate seat leon fr pd 150

been looking at all the info through the website today..

a few questions though if anyone could help..

firstly i hear the turbo spool up and also dump, not so much at high revs, is this normal or are they signs of turbo letting go, paranoid i think as i never thought a diesel turbo you could here that much?

also many of you guys have upgraded to 312mm discs, are these from the cupra r and if so what exactly would i require if wanted to do this mod..

and finally im gonna get the car re-mapped soon at rs tuning but having read on here standard clutch will struggle with the torque.. wheres the best place to get an uprated clutch, and if not how long would an oem one lets say from ECP last?

thats it lol :D

thanks in advance

cheers brett, yeah i did a search earlier and found alot of info in regards to awesome gti's clutch etc, some threads were alos very old and not wanting to spend towards 800 ish all in for a clutch..

really justy wanted to know hoe long maybe a LUK one would last, and if theres anything middle of the road

Nice looking motor there bud, I love the colour. Picked up a 55 plate one of these myself 2 weeks ago, just gave it a full service today and hoping to get it remapped myself next month. Where does your power kick in at? I'm finding nothing really until about 2000 revs, just wondering if this is about right or not. I had a pd130 Ibiza a couple of years ago and it picked up around 1800 before it was mapped then around 1500. Just wondered about the Leon here

Cheers mate, I think 2000 is about right, probably starts spooling at 1800 ish but kicks in at 2

An you hear yours spool up when u have the windows down?

The brake upgrade, you need to get the 312mm carriers from an S3/TT/Fabia VRS/Cupra, then use your existing calipers change the discs and pads to match the 312mm carriers.

My old FR 150 was very loud spool and dump at low revs, much quieter at high revs, probably because the engine note drowns it out and it tails of after 4,000 RPM.

I just sold mine, already want her back.... enjoy your new motor.

Mine is the same, the spool up is loud and it makes like a sucking sound when the pressure is released at low rpm. Its been like this for around 2 years so its normal i hope!

Ok atmospheric leak, wategate, what ever it is that releases the pressure...

There is no pressure to be released. Diesels don't have a throttle plate. I don't know what you're hearing, but it isn't any sort of valve releasing pressure from the boost side, diesels don't need them or have them.

Mine make Simalur sound but that's due to my jr come filter.

Clutch people say that u need to change the clutch with a remap but that depends on how old ur standerd clutch is plus how u drive it also depending who remaps it some maps are more aggressive than others. Its a lot of money to replace the cluches on these motors.

I am planning of mapping my pd160 soon but I'll only be replacing my clutch once it goes.

Partial cut-and-paste of my old post on dump valves

Petrol engines have a throttle mechanism which controls the flow of air between inlet (turbo-compressor) and the engine combustion chamber, so as to keep the air-fuel mixture in the ignitable range while throttling the engine's power output. The mass of air taken in and fuel added must both be carefully controlled.

When you close the throttle on such an engine the compressor is still pushing air into the inlet and it suddenly has nowhere to go. The back pressure will inevitably slow the turbo down, and cause turbo lag when the throttle is opened again.

The solution is to provide a pressure-actuated valve, which reacts to a difference in pressure between the two sides of the throttle. A dump valve opens to dump the excess pressure to the atmosphere. A recirculating blowoff valve diverts the air back into the inlet and does a much better job by equalising the pressure on both sides of the turbo. Without one of these, throttle response will be slower and throttles and turbos would have to be much more heavily engineered.

So dump valves are about throttle response at gearchange and other sudden transient events, not about performance in the leadfoot top-speed way of thinking.

The need for a dump valve is a weakness of turbocharged petrol engines, putting another contraption in the inlet which disturbs the gas flow and is a point of failure. I find it mildly astonishing that anyone should be proud of their car farting on the overrun. But then I like my diesel so I'm probably disqualified from having an opinion :)

Diesel engines have no throttle. A full charge of air is taken in at every inlet stroke. Power output is controlled by the fuel quantity injected at each combustion stroke. Mass flow around the compressor-combustion chamber-turbine loop is always uniform. This makes diesels much better candidates for forced induction.

Turbo wastegates are not dump valves, they limit the pressure on the exhaust turbine to prevent the turbo from overspeeding when the exhaust gas flow becomes too high i.e. at high rev's. The higher-performing VAG turbos use variable-geometry vanes in the turbine inlet and have no wastegate.

Mine does the same, loud on partial throttle and quiet on full boost.

The car is still pulling as it should so it sounds nomal to me..

Ohhh yes it spools up allright and you can hear it too, along with it sucking the air I as others have said.
