Hello everyone, I have a leon, year 2007 1.9 TDI( engine code BLS) with DPF and i put castrol edge 5w40 that have 505.00 or 505.01 spec(i don't remind very well). I understand that i have to put castrol edge 5w30 with 507.00 specs.
I change the oil last month, it is necessary to change again the oil with 5w30 that have 507.00 specs? or to drive like this until the next oil change? It causes big problems if i use 5w40 505.00 or 505.01(i don't remind very well) instead of 5w30 507.00 until the next oil change?
Sorry for my bad language.

BLS is a PD engine.

It is very important, absolutely imperative, that you know for sure that the oil you used is 505.01 and not 505.00.

505.01 is suitable for PD engines and will be fine in your BLS.

505.00 is NOT suitable for PD engines and will allow the cam lobes to wear out.

507.00 is also suitable for PD engines, in fact for nearly all VAG diesels. It is aimed at servicing to extended service intervals, which I've never been happy with. It will be more expensive than 505.01.

Castrol Edge is a name used for several different oils.

Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40 passes VW 505.01.

Castrol Edge 5-W40 does NOT pass VW spec 505.01, it is 505.00 only and is not suitable for your engine.

If you don't have the bottle/can that the oil came out of or the receipt with a clear identification "Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40", you'd better change it.

If it were me, I'd also be servicing at fixed intervals (15000 km).

With the PD engine in particular it is important to know the specification that the oil meets, not just how viscous it is, which is all that the 5W40 rating tells you.

Thanks Muttley for the info, I found the bottle and I take a picture of it.I can't post the pictures because I don't have 15 posts or more

That's the Turbo Diesel 5W40 as it says on the front, and on the back it has SAE 5W-40;ACEA C3;API SM/CF,VW 502 00/ 505 00/ 505 01, so it meets VW 505.01 and will be ok in your engine.

Change at 15km intervals.

Thanks again. Now i fell better because i change the oil about 1000 km ago, and a friend told me that i need ONLY to use 5w30 with 507.00 spec because i have a particle filtre. In the user manual says 5w30 with 507.00 specs, but if you say that's ok to stay with 5w40 until the next change of oil(I do it every 10 000 km ) then it's ok :D

Having done more research and looked at oilmans reply in the what oil thread above, it seems that 507.00 is recommended for diesels with DPF because of the affect of burned oil residues on the DPF. The 505.01 will lubricate your engine properly, but doesn't conform to the low SAPS requirement the is needed for the DPF.

Having read that, I don't know how much of a difference it will make over 10000 km. It will depend to some extent on how much fast running you do, as lots of low speed mileage means that the DPF gets little chance to regenerate.

Thanks again for the replay, I think i would change the oil with recomanded one for safe.
You know if I need to change again the filters or I just need to change the oil?

I thought 507 was low soot oil and was meant to be used in cars with DPF, I am sure it says it in the car handbook. Might be better asking this in the car specific section

507 is low ash and for cars with dpf, If the manual says 507 then that is what you should put in, it's not worth the possible problems for £60 on some oil of the correct specification.

Both are fully synthetic and meet all the specs you need. I think that Edge is a more recently formulated oil, newer, but whether that makes it better is something I can't tell.

I would go for Edge, the description and characteristics are bigger than SLX one and I think is better:D
