1.4 non turbo? Keep the panel filter (or swap with sports K&N/Green/Pipercross panel filter). Another option: Pipercross Venom / BMC CDA, close cone filter.
generally I've seen enclosed systems or panel filters work best on near standard N/A cars. Open cones will make more noise but can actually drop power if it a poor place and sucking hot air. (Did on my old 1.4 MG).
my mate put a k&n cone filter on his ibiza and after a day he took it off saying he hated it it guzzled his fuel!! (he's heavy footed anyway) did sound awsome though. is it worth getting a cone filter?

+1 keep the standard airbox and panel filter. Aftermarket foam filters don't filter the microscopic particles from the air as well as a standard paper filter, they suck in hot air causing power loss, and finally if it's one of the ones that need oiling, then the oil eventually buggers up your MAF.
Use a closed filter (panel or closed cone design), sucking hot air is killing for a NA engine. Turbocars have charged air cooling, so placement of the air filter isnt as critical as with a NA engine.
