Right, I've got my winter wheels on now so I decided to plasti dip one of my 17s to see what it looked like, here was the result:

It looks quite good, IMO, and so I put it in front of the car to get some idea of what it would look like:

I think it looks quite good, other views are welcome, though!

But looking at what I need to finish the job off, I'm wondering whether I'm just better getting them properly returned rather than plasti dip.
I'd want to redo the one I've done (because I messed it up a bit) and therefore I'll need 4 cans of plasti dip (£70). I also fancy using the metal user, so say I need 2 cans of that (£35). So that's £105. Now it's also recommended you use their primer to achieve a longer lasting finish, this only comes in a tin so I'll need a spray set too. So it's all mounting up to a fair price only to really obtain a 'temporary' solution.

Would I be better having them sprayed/powder coated, Matte or gloss? Or just leave them silver (all my badges and grills are blacked out).

Cheers guys :D

It sounds like if you want to do it, get it done properly.

However, what about the coats of plasti dip and then just 2 coats of plasti dip gloss per wheel, instead of metallic.

I was under the impression that plastidip was tough as nails and lasts a good long while? I am planning on plastidipping mine too in the summer.

The glossifier only seems to come in tins, which is why I said metalizer. It says on the plasti dip website that the metalizer provides a gloss finish? I don't know, and for that reason maybe I should get it done properly haha

Jarre, That looks well done. Personally I would go for a refurb. A local place to me does £120 a set without tyres on. So for the price you listed above, I would go for a refurb.

PS. Your car needs the FL spoiler lol ;)

A refurb might be better lasting, plasti dip is meant to be good but time will tell. I'd had to spend the same price as a refurb to get it completed and for it to only last a couple of months before needing doing again. Another point to note is that one of my alloys does need returning anyway because I curbed it letting an ambulance through a queue of traffic a couple of months back.

When repairing an alloy does it need to go through a complete respray anyway?

ah thanks! Might be worth getting them sprayed for that reason anyway. Still not sure as to whether I should go black or keep them silver. Maybe even gun metal/anthracite?

I'm sure that using the plastidip primer makes the paint much more difficult to remove, more of a permanent change than a temporary one.

Well the point of the primer is that it helps the plasti dip to bond better, so yeah I guess it will make it more of a permanent solution!

Gunmetal definately.

I'm going to get my spare set of Andromedas done in a metallic anthracite.

What about bronze. Black car with bronze wheels looks so good, but im yet to see a Leon with that colour choice

I didn't think about bronze! Personally I don't think it will suit my car, it is just a standard leon so may look silly. If I had a BTCC that was lowered and a spoiler maybe :D

For me, black wheels on a black car don't really work. They work well with a lairy painted car, but it's too monochrome with a black car.

Slightly darker than standard silver would be my choice (coincidentally the colour my wheels go when I haven't cleaned them in a while - I reckon they do actually look better dirty, and my car's black).

I have to agree with the 'colour my wheels go when I haven't cleaned them', I used to think that my wheels would look good that colour.

You're probably right with black on black not working, plus I guess that would make my car look extremely drug dealer like haha! Not good when you spend a lot of time in Liverpool...

Jarre, get them done properly, pay once.

The lads over on the FocusST site swear by Romax on Portrack Lane, Stockton or Prestige Powder Coatings at Hartlepool, the latter a little cheaper IIRC, finish from both absolutely superb by all accounts and circa £50 a wheel.
