ive recently changed the coil packs after having the engine light come on
but now a month or two later the car doesnt seem to be starting first time
it will do this for a few times and then it will start mainly on the 3rd time on turning the key but the engine light will be on..
when it fails to start and i stop turning the key i hear a slight clunk noise which slightly worries me ?
the car will then randomly start fine a few days later and this will then re occur again a few days later mainly when its wet or cold ( maybe random )
the car drives normally and still pulls and spins up the wheels which suggests to me its not the coil packs again
any ideas?

Have you checked your temperature sensor?

I had a similar problem and turned out the temp sensor was under reading a hell of a lot.

Just an idea :)

how would i check the temperature sensor ?
its always on 90
strange you say that because i do have white smoke that comes out the exhaust aswell and passes by my side windows when ticking over
would that maybe suggest head gasket ? as you mentioned the temp gauge ?
and battery ? ill give it a check

I had this problem with my LC randomly not starting but after a few times it would get there. Turns out it was
was the crankshaft angle sensor. Got the part for about £12 on eBay and hit it changed over. Never had a problem since.

Vagcim scan showed it as a vehicle speed sensor intermittent fault. You could try to get a scan to see if it throws up a fault code.

I was also getting the EPC fault light coming on.

See this thread to see if any if the symptoms fit.

I wouldn't jump to major conclusions like that mate.

To test either plug vagcom in, when you crank the car have the measuring block for temp sensor open from memory it's 003 but don't quote me on that. Watch the temperature as you crank the car. If it drops then its knackered.

Alternatively if you don't have access to vagcom your local motor factors will have a sensor, I paid £6 for mine.

Hope this helps ;)
