poor/weak FM signal in my Leon standard stereo

I normally drive my MKIV Golf to work during the week, but the other day (due to a flat battery) I took the Leon.

I tuned the radio to the same station and drove the exact same route I always do, but I noticed that the FM signal I received was far weaker than I got with my Sony head unit in the Golf.

Now the Sony head unit in the Golf is about 10-12 years old and I replaced the area with a £3 cheapo job off eBay as the other one snapped in a car wash. My aerial in the Leon is standard (AFAIK), but the FM signal I can pick up always seems quite weak.

For the particular station I was on (Clyde 1) I found that I lost signal about 20miles before I normally would do in the Golf.

Is there any way of upgrading or boosting the aerial to receive a stronger signal?

My Leon is a FR model from 2008 (58 plate). I should also point out that the problem isn't limited to that individual station, it is also the same with a local commercial radio station here in South-West Scotland called "West FM".
