hi all, im hoping some home mechanics could offer some advice.

ive been reading the online manual for the s3 about strut removal and it says you need to unbolt the right hand drive shaft from the gearbox flange to do that side.

can you remove the strut whithout doin this or not?

I take it you mean suspension strut, if so I changed mine and can confirm you dont need to remove drive shaft to take it off.

Nope no ball joints need split and no driveshafts need removed

All you need to split is the hub... Which isnt too hard!

Springs will need compressed to remove strut and a bit of brute force will get the shock out

Yes take pinch bolt out at back of hub. They you have to try and spread it open to let the shock slip out!

I found the cheapest way was an old 8mm allen key ground down on 2 opposite faces (so that it fits into gap) then when you turn the allen key 90 degrees it should split the hub for you

Poor explanation but hope you get it :O
