Anybody had this problem? It seems to be with the linkages off I can get all gears by using the shifter on the gearbox, however I have aligned the gearbox and shifter in the home position but still... No avail.

I can get first, 3rd and 5th gears no problem, but nuetral seems to be where the gears 2/4/R should be

Any thoughts on this? Or what the problem could be? It's genuine VAG gearbox oil, new clutch and release bearing in, I've bled the clutch twice now and still no progress on this

It would be too bad but the cars face first in the garage, so need reverse

Got reverse, however my clutch seems to stick sometimes, still no 2nd or 4th

Could this be air still in the system?, as I double checked nd no air was coming out after it was bleeded

Are you sure you've aligned both cables correctly? As if you can engage the gears from the top of the box then it can only be the cables or your shift lever...

2nd n 4th are extending the cable, so check there is the correct adjustment as it sounds like you've adjusted it incorrectly and do not have enough room left to go down to 2nd n 4th. Undo the front to back cable end, place the stick where neutral should be and reclamp the cable end. If this doesn't fix it then I'll need some pics of the situation as I doubt your local to me..

Yeah Tucker, I've aligned them 3 times now 100% correctly, I've locked the gearbox in home position, undone the cogs to clamp the cables, and locked the gear lever in home position

I'm most likely better off getting a video (I'm in Aberdeen) but I can feel the start of the synchro to the gears, I just can't get them in as the gearstick hits it's furthest travel the stick can physically do

It's very, very odd this one, the gearbox was fine before I put it on the new engine, I left them in their position and when new engine and box was in it just isn't right.

One thing I must note, is when aligning the cables, when in home positions, the gear selection cable pops out back, and sideways from the black clamp.

From what you've said here 'as the gearstick hits it's furthest travel the stick can physically do' you can fix this by unclamping the front to back cable, move the stick forward a little and re clamp the cable, giving you more space to move back into 4th.

If this stops you getting 3rd then something is a wry.

Your last statement... Could you clarify some more? The cable should enter the sprung clamp in the centre of the diameter, viewed from the direction the cable enters (gearbox end.. Black, plastic, goes on the ball one end and the cable the other, just to be sure) and remain in the centre when locked. They have 3 lined pawls that grip the cable. Make sure all 3 are present. And some video / pics would help.

Unfortunately, though the same country, I'm central Scotland. 2.5 hrs to Aberdeen I think?

Tucker, I have 3 videos, however, this is the only one that has uploaded quickly, the other 2 will follow, it shows me doing the gearlinkage alignment, I have even tried as you said, stick the gearstick higher up, its in a video, where I put it say.. half an inch up, but In that position it gets stuck in 5th gear completely.

I have just flushed the clutch again, for about 5 minutes, there is no air going to the master cylinder

but this at the moment gives you a rough description of what im meaning, Ill get the others up soon

Aligning the stick higher shouldn't get you stuck in 5th!

The only thing I can think of that would maybe cause this is the cables not being correctly seated in the bracket before being clipped with the 'c' clip... As it tries to extend the cable it is simply pushing the outer back?

Unclip the cable from the bracket and reseat and reclip it... See if it fixes it?

Yes, the bracket bolted to the gearbox though 3 rubber bushes, and the cables pass through the bracket. There's a c clip holding them in place.

You were right, there was a clip off (however not the c clip) it was a clip on the other side that holds seals etc in - it was a ******* to get on

However I can now gear all gears, but reverse can be engaged without even being pushed dow

The clutch pedal also sometimes gets stuck down on the floor, despite the clutch being bled my only thought is there may be air trapped at the clutch master cylinder (as I hadn't taken it off or pushed piston back) not sure if this is a probable cause

The release bearing makes slight noise engaged aswell, unsure if it has anything to do with it, but thank you very much for your help so far - it's got me that step further, I didn't think about clips

Another problem is I can't properly alling the linkages now due to in one of the videos the plastic stop to hold the gear shifter came out - I can't seem to get it back in.. I think my cupra would have rather whent to the scrap yard than get a new engine in her lol
