As above, most aftermarket pumps come with metal impellas on them now too.

The failure point is the plastic....and that looks like its made from plastic.

Like the theory though!

I would expect an electric pump is more suseptable to failure than the belt driven mechanical one
You need to make sure the wiring wasn't going to get snagged in the belt youd need to feed a supply to it with protection (like a fuse) and ideally add something like an ammeter to its supply as if it blew or stopped you wouldn't know until it over heated
