Dear drivers,

I own a mk4 Cupra 1.8 20VT.
Excuse me for making some writing mistakes, I'm from the Netherlands..
Before I went on a holiday to Italy, I did a oilchange.

When driving about 600 miles, I got a check-engine light which stated that the camshaft position was over-retarded (P0012 -"A" camshaft position - Timing over-retarded).
After resetting it, it didn't came back for about 1400miles.

During the trip I heard a rattling sound when making 3k> RPM.
I felt the car haa a struggle when driving away from a stop.
Because of the weight of the car I didn't feel that I had less power.

When coming back to home, the oil light came on with a acoustic sound.
Immediately stopped the car and towed it to the mechanic.
Replaced the oil-sensor and drove it back to home.

The rattling sound still exhisted and the oil light came up twice on a row.
The oil level was perfect so I ignored it and drove a total of 40 miles before I had the car back at the mechanic.

After replacing the pick-up pipe (which was very clean btw) I test drove the car and felt the power was back, but the rattle was still there and the check-engine light once again gave a P0012 camshaft over-retarded warning.

When I came to a stop at the mechanic the car coughs white smoke which gets more intense every second.
Even when I stopped the engine, it puffs out white smoke.
The smoke wasn't coolant because it smelled like oil.

It's possible that the car has been doing this the whole trip to/from italy because the car was filled with dirt which was VERY hard to get rit of, possibly oil.

Please help! I read the worst stories on the web of replacing an engine :cartman:

Have you got any videos showing the noise within the engine and it's rough location?

White smoke from the exhaust smelling of oil could indicate turbo failure, however, so could piston rings (doubtful unless ran with no oil at all)

I had camshaft failure a couple of months ago and the symptoms are very similar. Had to have my camshaft and pulleys replaced and unfortunately cost a wee fortune.
I had a horrendous rattle noise but didn't really notice much power dip. On the short stretch of driving the car home from work (very slowly) after it started making the noise (approx 10miles) the car had gone through a lot of oil and was pumping out a lot of purpley/black smoke (diesel TDI engine). I had no engine or oil pressure lights come on and when I went to the garage at first they thought the noise was big end bearings and I nearly died, but it went off to an engine specialist and when it was plugged in it came with up 'camshaft positioning sensor'. Car has only done 90,000 and is serviced regularly and I've owned the car since 36,000 and I'm very puzzled why it failed. Anyway, hope you get it sorted and it doesn't cost mega £'s or Euro's.

Rattling presumably comes from the chain which drives the camshafts.
It sounds like a chain and that sound coming from the turbo sounds a bit odd to me.
I have an appointment with a specialist on the first of septembre.
I'm so stressed with whats going on with my beloved car.

Fyi: the car has only done 70k KM so about 42k miles. Its been in excellent service so its a big question to me, how this happened.

What was the exact troublemaker and what did you pay for it in total.
Id really want it fixed but I hope it doesnt get beyond the 2k euro's
