Upgrading Soundsystem

Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading my soundsystem (along with a cheeky remap) as music means a lot to me when I'm driving. I am willing to spend around £300ish does that sound enough to get a decent quality level of sound? Bearing in mind that I will want someone to fit it for me as I don't want to be the one taking apart the FR. One of the speakers on the passenger side has blown i think it may be the tweeter so that definitely needs replacing. And I don't think I'm overly fussed about getting a sub in the boot as long as I have decent bass response from the other speakers.

I have a Kenwood DNX520VBT already fitted in the car.

What would you guys recommend? I know a few of you have changed the speakers yourselves but has anyone gone to an audio shop and said I have x amount of money what are my options? I just don't want to get my pants pulled down!

If you are just changing the door speakers, then I would strongly urge you to DIY and use the extra cash from not having it professionally fitted on the speakers themselves. Your budget would easily cover some decent kit if you DIY. I think you could probably lose a third of it on a couple hours labour.

If you were amping it up, subs, pulling up the carpets and getting involved with electrics then I could understand you wanting it done by someone pro - but speakers are essentially plug and play with the correct adapter and harness.

The Kenny 520 has a built in amp and has RCAs if you were to run a sub in the future, so half the work is done for you by the headunit itself.

I think your approach for just a speaker upgrade is essentially pulling your own pants down.

*Apologies if there is a physical reason you havent mentioned why you cannot do the install yourself.

Ok fair enough! And no there is no physical reason, I just don't want to destroy my car to be honest! I can get a bit heavy handed when things to come out and tend to break stuff.

Maybe I will order some speakers, and try and follow the tutorial that is on here. If I have no luck then I'll go down the professional route!

Will the amp from the HU be enough to power the new higher power speakers?

Thanks for your help.

I don't mean stupidly loud. But obviously they are going to have more power than the standard speakers haha!

Your speakers are not the power source, that’s the amp. What you need to do is the following:

Find out what Power (watts) output the Kenwood head unit is - 50W per channel, for example

Go buy some quality speakers who's long term power handling is greater than the wattage output of the amp, this way, you can play your music loud without the sound distorting.

Ideally, you want a good quality set of 165mm co-axial speakers consisting of 'say' mid-bass & tweeter, such as JBL or VIBE

And fitting speakers is literally a somple job, you don’t even need to remove the door card:

· Take the speaker grills off the bottom of the doors

· take old speaker out

· screw in speaker adaptor

· Screw in new speaker & replace grills

You can change all 4 speakers in 30 - 40 mins tops

The speaker adaptors come with a wiring adaptor that’s plug & play…….you cut one of the wire s on the adaptor & that disables the stock tweeter in the top of the door, so you don’t even need to worry about that either

There is a massive thread on replacing speakers in the guides. Save yourself a fortune and DIY mate

If you go for component, you might want to disregard the tweeter that comes with the kit, just install the woofer speaker and continue to use the factory door tweeter.

But yeah if you buy co-axial speakers you will probably want to disconnect the door tweeter or it will be treble overkill.

I have hertz esk165 system in the front and ecx 165 in the back. Pain in the ass changing tweeters but well worth it. Id say wiring in crosses overs is essential if you want better sound. Also sound proof behind the speaker, that makes a huge difference. The hertz setup and sound proofing will set you back around 300. Im now running an sr4 amp now and the sound is amazing.
