Sounds like its coming loose again. I would check whether the nut is supposed to be replaced once it has been loosened as it has to be torqued to something like 200lbs and could well be single use.

was my immediate thought so took it back to my mate who discovered the issue, it was tight.

I will have it replace it like you have suggested as once removed the retaining tang gets bent back from what I've now been told

Issue is still ongoing and worse than ever.

It was very recently taken a on test run a VAG specialist who described it as "all over the place" & not only pulling left its pulling to the right, no traction and wheels fighting against each other, was told there is a "little play in the rack" but nothing that bad that they would advise a new rack, everything looks OK on inspection and its turned in to guessing game the same day it had a full hunters alignment, it tightened the steering up a little but there was a still a slight vibration throughout steering, and over any cracks or humps in the road it veered to the left, the wheel just shoots off..

car went back the following week for something else, was taken out again.. again they seemed miffed to what it is and again confirmed how "skitty" "light" "pulls"

inspected again and now they have recommended a rack, it just seems all guess work and I'm scared to throw the best part of £500 at it in-case it isn't,
what gets me is from a few month back, Where earlier in the thread i mentioned it seemed to be corrected after we had noticed the drive shaft nut on the NS, that day we replaced it and tightened it and balanced both fronts and it was perfect, its a joy to drive when right but it only last a few days and went loose and with more play than in 10 toddlers at a play area!

I'm no mechanic, far from it but im a little lost with it now tbh I honestly thought someone could of told me its "definitely this"

The problem seems to be coming from the OS, i can feel something banging against something over cracks, bumps etc and while running the car you can hear is whining and grinding, something is touching, the braking has been effected too you can hear that grinding but only like this when all this steering issue is present, example when the car was OK a few month back after us replacing the drive shaft nut it was all fine?

Current work
rear wishbone bushes (R32 Ones)
top mounts
tie rod ends
new eagle f1's all round
hunter alignment
Ball joint NS (nobody has said the OS needs replacing)

should I try
Inner CV?
wheel bearing?
Tie rod? ONLY ENDS HAVE BEEN REPLACED

I understand its very hard to diagnose with out seeing the car etc but I do appreciate you're knowledge and opinion.

Cheers

any left or right play youd think youd be able to pick up simply by jacking the front up and checking both sides for play but for this kind of issue for me it would definately point towards bottom arm bushes or ball joints do you feel a twang or slight jump after breaking when letting off the pedal as you come to a stand still?

really does sound like the problem i had with one of my ball joints but i have a lcr and the ball joints are seperate from the wishbones they just bolt on one of the bolts on my ball joint had snapped and it was sliding up and down the cast arm and grinding wanted to throw me into bushes id look into the ball join on the ns.
