Fuel Filters and Diesel Fuel to use?

Hey guys and gals! :)

Just want clarification, been looking around for fuel filters and I've seen more people mention that the Bosch filters tend to be the better ones to go for.

I've found a few Bosch Fuel Filters but most state that they are for the AHF, whether that matters or not I'm not sure as I know my engine code is ASV. I have found one with ASV though!

What is with this "with filter heating" and "without filter heating"?

I've checked the "suitable cars" tab and this states it's right for my car, but what I'd like to know is what are the better filters to use? Are this type the better type to use for my car?

Bosch Fuel Filter IN-LINE FILTER

Concerning fuel, I see people mention using premium Diesel, stating Shell and BP tend to be better when you compare them to supermarket fuel? I've read it's down to the additives that makes the fuel not as good from the supermarket fuel.

I am contemplating starting to use BP / Shell Diesel over the supermarket fuel with a better standard fuel filter to give my car more long term loving, if that makes sense lol! So what do you people recommend or have to say on this topic? I'm quite interested to see what and where people fuel up! =)

Bosch are the ones to go with mate as I think its closest to OEM, filter heating? That's something I think is for other cars in vag range as when I changed mine I didn't see any sort of loom for heating!? (Somebody got more info on that?) Just go onto gsf car parts or euro car parts, pop in ya reg and view the filters, they will also recommend the best filter for your motor, remember you get what you pay for. I got bosch and no issues at all :)

I always use a Bosch fuel filter when servicing my pd130. I'd recommend filling it with diesel before fitting it to the car or you could be there a while trying to start it lol!

It's funny you mention the supermarket fuel as I've used Tesco fuel for the past 2 years and I do 500 miles every week, never had a problem. Although recently I have been seeing a lot of post's slating the fuel for being crap which is starting to get my attention. I too am thinking about switching to BP/Shell for piece of mind.

Thanks for the responses guys, I'll definitely grab myself the Bosch Fuel Filter and I'll have to see what this cleanser is all about, reading a few reviews a few people have mentioned about using more on the first use of it to increase the effectiveness of getting through the components quicker? As according to some reviews using just the instructions guidance it can take up to 200 miles for the stuff to get through the whole fuel system?

Truth be told, I'ad hazard a guess that it would make no difference using more than the instructions? I could be wrong though, how do you apply it supersticky? Stick to 1 measure per fill up?

Hartosh1, I've been using Tesco for a good while myself now to be honest and I'm considering the change to see if it makes more of a difference. I'm going to start with BP with a new filter and this Millers Diesel Power Ecomax (500ml) to see what wonders it can do for my car =)

As for the filling of the fuel filter, Ronin225 mentioned a while ago when I paid him a visit that filling up the fuel filter first would be a top tip to follow so thank's for the same tip! :)

I know that when I change the filter, I have to turn the ignition on to prime the filter, just not enough turns to start the engine until as much air is out of the system. Newbie question though; Am I right in saying I shouldn't need to have my fuel cap off to get all the air out of the filter?

Thanks again for the replies peeps! :)

Taking the fuel cap off will make no difference as you have a small secondary over spill pipe just under the main filler hole, this links to the filler neck. When you've turned the ignition 2-3 times to prime then just fire it up, will start no matter what as you still have fuel in the rail, I would let it run for about 30 seconds then turn off leave for 5 mins ( fuel will settle and or return to tank ) then fire up again should be spot on :D . sorry I wasn't very clear on the cleanser use, ok mate tbh you could prime the filter completely with a cleaner and it wouldn't harm it, so just prime your filter with just derv then just follow the introduction's on the bottle mate. I had a post on here about mpg fuels / cleansers and the stuff works well. Slightly improves performance ( at least 2 weeks + of use ) better mpg ( mine was 30ish per gal now 44.9 avg ) umm that's all I can think of mate

What's this diesel rhino everyone was raving about saying it was the best thing since sliced bread? I still don't use a additive with my pd150 as ive heard some can knacker the injectors?

Cheers supersticky mate, what do you mean by priming the filter with just derv lol? Not on your wave length there mate haha! :D

Just recently put a double shot of Millers Diesel Power Ecomax (2x 50ml shots) was at reserve level or just under on the fuel tank, then topped up at BP with BP regular diesel (full tank :D) So just on to wait and see how it goes.

Will be ordering the filter after this reply then hopefully next week I can change my fuel filter and see how things go!

Never heard of Diesel Rhino, where does that stand compared to Millers? I'm not 100% sure on an answer for you concerning the injectors Luke, will be better with someone in the know to reply (hopefully soon for you! :))

Wow, the millers is expensive in that eBay ad, I pay about £11 for a 500ml bottle, when you insert the filter into the housing top it up with diesel then refit the lid, it should then start as normal without the need to crank it over to prime the system.

Thanks guys, I have honestly never heard of the term "derv" until today, but to be honest I've never really put much thought in to Diesel until about 5/6months before I got my car haha! :D

Thanks Martin, I went to Halfords to be honest just out of convenience and the fact I really needed to top up, where did you go to get it for £11? The housing I am assuming the part it sits in the engine bay with the fuel lines and sensor plugged in to it, yes? Refitting the lid as in the filter can be unscrewed or just the part at the bottom to drain or the top where the sensor goes back in?

I'll have to check a couple of videos or so to see about it as my understanding is that it might get a little bit messy when I take the fuel lines off? :D

You could clamp the hose to minimize the mess that's what I did last time I changed it. I made the mistake of not filling the filter up with diesel before re-fitting it and it took me forever to get it started. What I don't understand though is it does prime itself so the filter was full but still took ages.

Thanks again guys, I think I'll purchase those clamps as well to make it less messy haha!

I'll be doing the fuel filter next week hopefully! Fingers crossed for when I do it lmfao! I will take pictures of the new and current filter and will cut open the current filter when done to see what it looks like inside :D

mines 2003, whats yours?
i've used the millers eco stuff and to me it didn't do a thing. the diesel rhino to is the best, triple the doseage for the first tank and you will notice the difference after a long run. i noticed it after about a 15 mile drive.

Same mate, 2003. GN03 :)

First time using the Millers additive, will have to have a try at the Rhino, sounds pretty good and quick to do what it needs to also! Though that's giving the first dosage as a triple shot right? Should notice a difference if I use it on a trip up Manchester to see my family haha! :D

What I will do is use up this Millers and get myself some Rhino next months pay for when the Millers is used up haha! :D

Have you done any mods to your car at all mate? Any fixes? Where about in Birmingham are you?

Re: filter heating. The TDI engine fuel systems perform filter heating by means of that little valve in the fuel return line that clips into the top of the filter. There is a thermostatic valve in there that opens when the fuel in the filter is cold and allows some of the returned fuel (which is hot, having been through the injection pump (on non-PD cars) or the block and injectors (on PD cars) to mix with the cold tank fuel. This warms the filter up quickly and reduces the fuel viscosity through the filter.
