Hi all

Had to have all new pads and discs on my car and the garage has charged me £701. I've had to pay as what else can I do, the car was in before the easter weekend and getting it back today. They say they had to get an engineer to remove a seized pin on one the calipers and after getting the fitting kit it was missing a retaining bolt or something so they had to get the same engineer to machine a part.

I'm thoroughly shocked at the price as I was originally quoted £314 for the work and that was already a bit more than I needed to spend at the moment due to paying for a house and bills for 2 people on 1 income...

Have I been had?

It does seem a bit dodgy, why they needed someone else to do it puzzles me, any half decent garage should have everything they need, VAG have been using loads of parts for years

I wouldn't have paid it. £701 for pads and discs? Lol. Sorry bud but that's beyond a joke. Why didn't they contact u? They quoted a cost they have to stick to it or speak to u if its going to be different or they find something that needs more attention. Then they had to call someone in to remove a seized bolt? Then machine another? Absolute crap!!

think your right, the first quote seemed a little dear but £700! I wouldn't let it go, even if you've paid your bill it might not be to late, trading standards might like to hear about this as I bet your not the first customer that needed engineering assistance.

Here's a breakdown

Renew both brake discs (front) £45
Renew both brake pads (front) £22.50
Renew both brake discs (rear) £45
Renew both brake pads (rear) £22.50
Standard labour (caliper repair and studs) £115

Parts
Front brake discs £79
Rear brake discs £36
Rear brake pads £16.25
Front brake pads £119.07
Fitting Kit £79.27
Consumables £5

VAT £116.91

Seems most of the money was on the parts....? Apparently they couldn't get Pagid to fit the front but the rears had Pagid no problems

Front *and* rear. Not quite so bad then - but labour charges for disc and pads was pricey. Shouldn't be charging more than a couple of hours labour for both ends, rather than disc and pads separately. Was this a dealer? What garage was it? Parts and engineer costs look about right.

It was a BMW specialist garage around the corner from me, they are used at my work for over 50 company cars so since they are very close I thought I'd give them a go rather than my usual VAG specialists as they are quite a bit further away now I've moved house. I'll PM you the name.
