So these are completely pointless. Can they be de-activated?

Yes, via vcds vagcom or whatever it's called now. Have a look for forum members in your area, there are a few with the equipment & knowledge to do it.

I agree with you. We live up a very steep, narrow road with hairpin bends - the cornering function is really helpful.

If you don't need it you can just ignore it.

I can see the idea behind it but all it really seems to do is to make it look to other road users that you have your fog lights on when it's not foggy and that one of the bulbs has blown. I can't say I've ever noticed the minimal extra light thrown out as really being that useful. The main headlights are more than sufficient IMO.

On my Mk2 I switched that behavior off using VCDS.

The fogs also come on when you select reverse gear. I'm not really sure what the idea behind that is because when reversing you should be looking in your mirrors and behind you, not in front of you.

?but surely your still keeping a watch to the side and front of the vehicle even when focused on reversing? especially if not reversing in a straight line

I agree with some of the others, found them quite useful sometimes on the mk2, that extra bit of low down light for avoiding scraping the front splitter when maneuvering in a dark un metalled car park or similar

Yes, I do keep an eye on the front for low obstacles but I've got front parking sensors on mine to help me in such situations so maybe that's why I couldn't think of a good reason for the fogs coming on in reverse but I can see your point and your explanation does make sense.

Mine don't seem to be active? I was stopped in the office car park this morning with the dipped headlamps on (using the auto mode), and I turned the steering wheel and got out to have a look. No fogs on. Was this a valid test?

So many makes of car have this feature, that seeing one with just one foglight on is common now, also your headlights only point straight ahead when turning so won't light up the side view as much. Even when reversing it helps with parked cars that may be in front or to the side of you, so you see them better.

Ah, that's interesting, why is that? And can I turn it on again without resorting to VCDS?

FR's sold in Ireland have LEDs as standard.

The general view here is that are disabled because they are a yellow glow compared the LEDs. But a simple bulb swap sorts that out. Some have used led fogs others like me use a blue tinted bulb from mitec all discussed in another thread.

Having recently enabled them, I find them great

call me cynical but i look at cornering fogs as a way for garages to make more money from awkward to replace* bulbs when they fail.

*possibly not with the Leon if they can be accessed from the front but that would be a small minority example :)

So, spoke to the dealer last night, who now claims that the FR with the LED lights does not have cornering fog lamps.

I think I need a VCDS system to make these changes - does anyone on here live in Ireland and have VCDS? I don't really want to buy it as its massive money and its doubtful I'm going to use it more than once!

For once a dealer is actually right :D
Leon Mk 3 s with led lights don't have the cornering fog lights
But they can be easily activated using vcds

What's the likelihood of the dealer software (assuming there is any?) being able to activate the cornering lights, altering the DRLs to include the rear lights, and folding the mirrors in on first lock press?

I asked mine to do a couple of small mods with VCDS (fold mirrors on lock, basically) and they wouldn't, as it wasn't a standard factory fitting for the car they wouldn't want to change it from how it was built....

And this is exactly what I expect the dealer to say as well. Still looking for a VCDS option that doesn't involve me spending 300+ notes ...

crazy part is, that obviously it's designed-in, or the activation by VCDS wouldn't be possible!
have read on here that the reason is that in ultra-cold conditions they could freeze in the folded position, and as soon as you unlock the car they'll try to open and bugger something up.
But if you've folded them by holding the fob button down for 3 seconds they're folded anyway, so what's the difference between that, and a quick lock/fold?
Bah.....
