Hi folks,
Just putting my feelers out to see what you recommend make/model wise for a dash cam. There's a thread but its about a year old so there will be more up to date cameras out now.

Want to get one sorted soon as I witnessed a hit and run yesterday, cyclist getting knocked down on a roundabout, the fiesta taking off rather than stopping. Kicked the wife out the car to check on the guy on the road whilst I took of after the clown and took a photo of his plate.

Would appreciate any links to anything you guys recommend.

cheers

Still can't fault my g1w for price. Pic quality is HD. But buy from estore009 on ebay as there are loads of fakes.

https://vimeo.com/134808164

This is a recent near miss I had. It doesn't look like much but thats only cos of how i managed to deal with the situation. What the footage doesn't really demonstrate is that I'm doing about 60 on very bumpy country road with a traction/braking affected by the bumps. Also I actually perform an emergency stop and the abs kicks in and the car sways from side to side. Fortunately I'm trained to look so far ahead I managed to stop, other wise the tw@t would have killed us overtaking like that just prior to a blind bend. My speed and his combined would have been fatal

Just watched the upload footgage quality is greatly reduced for it. On a tablet or phone it's perfect even with my filthy windscreen

I've got a Transcend DrivePro 200. It's brilliant, and since having it I wouldn't drive long distance without it. Even if you're not involved in anything, you still record people driving like total d1cks.

I've captured a few near misses caused by other drivers, but mostly its caught cats and pheasants running in the road. If that's as severe as my recordings get then I'm happy.

Downside with this is what Dan_FR said, it has a ton of wire which is great but it has a fairly sizeable plug that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket.

Also, you can't switch it on without recording. so the only way to see the recordings without it recording, is to remove the MicroSD card and put it in a computer.

You can download a free App for this too and connect it to your phone via WiFi while on the move so that's really handy.

I wired mine with a fag lighter adaptor witch has earth and live wires comeing from it then tucked all the wires were the fuse box is, the top row of fuse there is a couple of ignion lives, put a spade on live and connect earth to body job done just make sure you add an inline fuse as well

Can anything be done if you forwarded footage to the local police, not for accidents but general careless/idiotic driving?

Thanks for the comment lads, do the G1w and the drivepro 200 have a recording loop?? If so I take it there is a button you would press if a situation as to happen!! Also I would just get an autos park to hardware it for me so cables would be an issue. Only problem I can see is where to mount it because of the area that isn't cleared by the wipers behind the rear view?? Suggestions?

Another transcend drive pro user here. In fact, I like it so much I have two. One for the front and one for the rear.

To me its a hazard to have cables dangling from the lighter socket so I had it wired to the fuse box with a splitter. I have four USB cables feeding from it; two for cameras and two more for charging phones. For a Leon, 5 meter cables will do the fuse box to rear distance.

Also, if you decide to get a rear camera, don't buy a suction cup for it as the rear window has the raised bumps from the heating element and it will not grip. You'll have to use the sticky 3M pad the camera comes with.

The transcend come with a loop recording system (which can be turned off f that's your thing). They also have an emergency g-sensor, so it will protect a recording if the car changes speed too fast.

The G1W is good, i wired mine into the cables behind the dash. Only prob i have with it is that when the memory card is full it doenst overwrite, you have to manually format the card. Does last over a week for me that way but still would prefer not to have to do that.

Thanks for the advice rob!! Looks like the best to get for reasonable money is the prodrive200 then. Where about have you positioned it on the windscreen?

Thanks for the advice mate, I'm just going to get an autospark to piggy back another 12v to put inside my glovebox so that I can use it for charging satnav ect.

Sorry I don't have any pics showing the inside of the car and the car's away being detailed. Anyhow, you can see where I mounted my camera in the upper left corner of this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXTEvKPC2iQ&feature=youtu.be

The rear camera is mounted dead center and uppermost part of the rear window looking back, just in case someone decides to ram my car from behind

The youtube video comes from a gopro gripped to the headrest

Edit: Shawn I'm also in Edinburgh. Sean @ Auto Installs did all my installation, in less than an hour, very competitive price, he also unplugged my soundactor thingy.. Recommended chap

If you get longer USB cables (I used 3 meter cables for the front camera and two phones) remember that the plug of the camera is not exactly the same of typical phones, so you must order accordingly. Also, Sean put the cigarette splitter tucked away where the pedal box would be on the passenger side, thus getting a cable to the driver side and up to where I have my celphone mount the cable barely made it with 3 meter, so I would suggest you use nothing shorter than that.

The camera cable are mini-b USB while the phone usually are micro USB.

Something like this is what I used:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Charger-RAV...id=1438188112&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+car+charger

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Input-Rocke...05&sr=8-2&keywords=cigarette+lighter+splitter

http://www.amazon.co.uk/CostMad-Cig..._sim_23_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=0HMJKV7E8ZMGTKEB23G3

This for the front camera (although the kit includes one, can't remember if it was too short though)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-2-0-Min...1438188440&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+mini+b+3+meter

Then something like this for phones

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Micro-Charg...=1438188606&sr=1-9&keywords=usb+micro+3+meter

You also gotta get some micro sd card

I just picked from a search to illustrate, not that those are the same ones I used..

Cable runs under headlining and down a pillar into fuse box. Spare fuse hole with piggy back connector. Same way the btcc drl's are done. Comes on and off with the ignition, however I take cam in and out
So no one breaks in to nick it. Just tucks in behind rear view mirror nice and discreet

Police can deal with it, but are unlikely to have the time to and obviously footage would have to evidence careless or dangerous driving etc and need to show number plate clearly.
