Autoglass - windscreen to low?

Hi all

Had my windscreen changed the other day, driving home I noticed more wind noise than usual. On checking today I can get my key at widest angle between top of glass and roof and the chassis number in gap at bottom of passenger side is unreadable so only the very bottom of the letters can be seen.

Is the chassis plate part inside moveable? If not then screen definitely too low, can post photos.

Cheers

when ive had windscreens fitted i past they have tended to put two lengths of tape on the screen and run onto the roof, saying leave that on there for a few hours if possible while sealant goes off so screen wont move/drop.
did they do this?
PS, i dont know how much you paid or went through insurance, but id not recommend autoglass.
i found a local independant did it for virtually the same as the excess on my insurance.

Cheers, no they didn't use tape mate

So they came out again, wanted to hear the wind noise but slashing with rain so even I couldn't on test.

The bloke claims its not too low despite not being able to read the VIN number and is trying to say its the make of screen, wtf?!

Could anyone do me a huge favour please and measure the gap between top of glass and the roof line so I can compare? Would just put my mind at rest!

Many thanks in advance

on mine, measuring from the edge of the glass to the point at which the roof panel ends the horizontal section is 4mm.

Alternatively, i can just about force the end of 3 credit cards into the gap you have your key in.

your windscreen is lower than OEM. the gap is twice usual size?

Cossie-boy, mine sits fairly low down as well. Just looking at it and holding my key up, then i'd say it was almost the same as yours. The sun is right on it so it's hard to get a good pic, but give it a couple of hours when the sun moves and i'll take a pic for you and post it up as well.

Thanks lads, much appreciated!

So mty12345, can you still read your VIN ok in the bottom right hand corner?

Would be good to get a general feel for what is right and wrong!

Here you go mate, mine looks as low as yours, yet i can see my VIN with no probs, it sits very central to the window for it. Strange!

Actually looking again, yours is a good few mm lower than mine as i can almost ,but not quite ,get my key blade in the gap. I've no idea if mine is OEM or has been replaced prior to me having the car though.

sadly i am sure i will find myself looking at other leons later today...
however as the vin is covered and you have an example of windows fitted higher up, to me its clear its been fitted lower than before. especially if you have also then noticed wind noise.
if they do refit i suggest looking at it when fitted and then hours later to see if there is any movement.
or apply some masking tape and not use car for a few hours.

Thanks again for the replies chaps

It now appears I can get the key in on the passenger side, but not the drivers side, its just the wind noise which gets my goat each time im driving.

Im sure this has more to do with the fitting than the screen itself!

Shall measure later when get a moment and update!

If they outcome of the screen is that it is correctly fitted (I don't think it is) I'd still reject the screen.

The quality of the screen has been made with poor quality control measures and taking into perspective the fact that a windscreen makes up for a large percentage of the cars structural strength I wouldn't except a cheapo replacement! The fact that it doesn't line up with the VIN plate also means that the car hasn't been repaired to it's 'before' damage condition.

How do you mean before damage? I know the cars history from day one as sold it to a mate then bought it off him when he changed n id left the car sales job. Therefore it hasn't been hit if that's what you mean? Plus the last screen has the VIN space spot on

No i think he meant autoglass haven't repaired it to how the car was before your windscreen was damaged, so you'd have the right to demand a refund, or that they replace it with a better screen so that the car is back to how it was prior to the screen breaking etc. I.E the VIN lining up with the window for it

Not implying damage to the car chap. I was referring to the screens condition before it was damaged and needed replacing. The replacement screen doesn't match OEM quality so they haven't repaired the car to standard

What he said^^^

I've seen some shocking quality screens fitted over the years. Reject it for substandard quality. I had a customer a few years back where they cut 1cm off the back of the whole dashboard of a old saab! They had to remove the screen and had a specialist company come out a re fabricated the whole back section again as there wasn't a replacement dash available!

Oh right I understand now, yeah sure thanks

Not sure how picky I should be but I've noticed a maybe 5-10mm chip where i can see black paint? In the gap where the screens been moved about, its a real stressed as the car hardly has a mark on it!

Also there is some white cloth? Maybe sticky showing between the edge of dash board and the pillar trim. I'm almost sure that wasn't there before! Would they of touched the windscreen pillar trims?

Some fitters remove the trims, I presume some require it. They use some black paint/primer before fitting the new screen maybe you can see that?

Raise any concerns you have and if they say it's to spec then ask if they're ok with it being inspected by a separate company. Just drop into a VAG approved bodyshop and ask their opinion and go from there.

Needless to say 99% of customers who just complain on safety grounds get a new screen fitted.
