Hi All,

After a bit of advise, not really seat related but is VW options.

I got a promotion at work so i get a company car!

I dont really want to get rid of mine as i still love it, but it doesnt make financial sense
with the miles i might have to do and coming to end of pcp anyway.

My plan is to trade in mine with seat and get my mrs a little ibiza/mii, ive had the pcp for 2 years now and got it nearly new, so im hoping il either be break even or little bit owed.

Now the important thing, what to replace it with! now im being forced to pick from the list below
and they are all the 1.6 diesel variants (not happy about but hey cant moan)

I have choice of
mercedes a class
audi a3
vw passat or passat estate
bmw 1 series

Any ideas/comments?

Im really not tempted by the 1 series as not huge fan of bmw, i love the a class but the car i would pick doesnt come with a lot of options!
So its between a3 or passat, i like the idea of passat just because its the bigger car so has a big boot etc... which will be good but... i love the leon and the a3 is essentially just the same with trims on.

Agree with you about the BMW don't really like the interior and dash seems dated to me. Test drove the a180 before buying my Leon and it wasn't quite quick enough for me, suppose that feeling would get worse the larger the car you go for so my tip would be have a fun weekend out test driving!

Can't comment on the latest Passat but the 62 plate 140 CR I have has been excellent over 85k miles. Depends on what trim level you can get really. It is a big car, so not sure how it would be with slightly less power.
If its any guide I am due to replace mine in a few months ( free choice up to a value) and at the moment its between the Passat & the Skoda Superb.

yer well last 5 people to upgrade 3 have gone passat (2 with the estate 1 with normal) and 2 with the a3

i get £35 a month to put onto add ons and that not including sat nav, so could get some decent speakers in there.
i think ive hit that time in life when i want a bigger boot now, no kids yet but likely in next few years and i will have to keep this for 4 years, so im guessing passat is best option for that too.

But yer my biggest issue will be loss of power, going from 180bph to 110bph and a bigger car!

My last Passat was 1.6 tdi with just 105bhp (not sure if it's been changed to 110).My advice is don't do it. The lack of oomph frustrated me for 3 years.

from what i can see the new 1.6tdi passat has 118bhp, 0-60 is 11 seconds, mine currently is 7.2 seconds so be losing more than 50% of my time now!

Having done some research i think i have 2 choices

passat = if i want to turn into a older man go for comfort size but be slow (no offence to anyone who drives one!)
audi a3 = if i want to stay young !

decisions!!

If it was up to me, it would come down 100% to the trim level. It's a bit pointless asking without specifying which trim levels they are being offered in :p

For example, I'd probably take a 1 Series M Sport over an A3 S Line at this point, because following the facelift it is more modern and comes with better standard spec.

This ^^ . It also depends on what you are using your car for, are you going to do big miles in it? Then go for the best equipped inside. If its a 'perk' type car, I.e its going to sit in the staff car park all week, then maybe go for the more powerful option. Horses for courses etc etc. I had the Passat as I cover long distances regularly, mainly on motorways at all hours. So, it needed to be large ( tools & equipment carried) comfortable ( sat nav, climate, parking sensors, auto lights & wipers , cruise) and reliable. Oh plus it needed a spare, preferably full size, as I do not want to be stuck up a Scottish mountain at 3.00am with a useless can of foam.
It is also worth considering the BIK tax you will pay over the time you expect to have the vehicle. Remember also that if your salary is currently at or just below the 40% tax band, the resultant BIK can push you into the 40% level.

sorry to add a few more details

spec wise im not 100% sure but it is the bottom 2 spec levels so its not going to be sport anything, engine i dont have a choice over as mentioned previously.

I will probably be using it for 75% normal commute to work then 25% buisness miles which can include some big trips, im based in Birmingham and will have to go all over the UK, depending on what projects are going on but for example just complication something in Scotland where someone im working with was driving up to Glasgow every other week.

I like the passat because of the extra room and it comes out pretty much the same price as the A3 if you dont go for the estate, but im worried the 1.6tdi on a long motorway journey will just be abit loud and not have the grunt? Especially if i pick the estate version.

Does anyone have that engine and can comment?

I have the 1.6Tdi Toledo and it's absolutely fine on the motorway. Not to loud (I imagine the sound proofing in a VW will be better than in mine as well) and enough pull to get you along plus very economical if that's relevant to you.
