Hi everyone. Two months ago I bought a 2004 Ibiza 1.2sx and after having some oil problems the engine is now deceased, the top end has been pretty much destroyed (Timing belt skipped, now the valves are gone and two of the cylinders have lost compression). My car is now in a garage near Gateshead; 25 miles from home. I've been told its not worth repairing the motor, so I'm hoping to find a replacement; It'll cost 300 to fit which leaves me with around £350 for a motor and so far it's been a nightmare trying to find one. I've called all the local breakers I know and can't find any that are affordable, I've got some quotes from a comparison site (£270-360) and after stupidly spending ages inadvertantly calling premium rate numbers I'm completely lost. Most of the dealers I've spoken to have refused to send me any pictures of the engines so I can't see what I'm buying and to add to my anxiety the one dealer that has actually shown me what I'd be buying has sent me images of a motor that looks like it's been left outside with the oil cap off and has rust on the exhaust outlet and timing belt pulleys. One reputable dealer I know has a 1.4 engine, but I don't know if it'll fit my car? I've searched the internet and this forum and I keep seeing people being told to scrap their cars, but spending 600~ on repairing it seems sensible as I think the car should be worth over a grand when fixed versus selling it for pennies as scrap. I'm recycling my last two cars and knowing me and my luck I'd end up buying another PoS.

TLDR: I live in the North-East and I'm looking for a 1.2 AZQ engine for my '04 Ibiza SX or any other engine that will fit directly into its place. Could anyone tell me what other engines would fit (I know some Skoda's and Polos use the same engine) and point me towards any decent salvage yards/suppliers where I could find one with a warranty?

Thanks for reading.

Daryl.

I've actually got a 2003 Ibiza 1.2S parked up in my back yard. It used to belong to my younger sister, she purchased a Mini last year, declared this SORN and left it to rot lol

The vehicle itself is out of MOT and been used to house my car spares but if you're willing to make me an offer and arrange for a trailer, you can use the engine as part of your transplant and keep the rest as spares? The engine itself ticks over and idles spot on.

Let me know if you're interested :)

Loads.... eBay is your friend here

But you'll need to factor in a further £350 or so for a new cambelt... Otherwise it could grenade on turn over.
Thanks for the reply m0rk, I've been looking on eBay but I'm not much of a mechanic so I'm going to have to get some second opinions before I buy one from there. I didn't know I had to get a new cambelt? I thought they were only about £80:confused

Thanks for responding, but if your located in Sheffield I don't think I could get a car from that distance, I live in County Durham and my Seat is near Newcastle. If I could pick it up how much would you want for it?

I need a new waterpump as well? The temp dial stayed at 50 (or whatever it was usually at) when it broke down. I've been told it was something to do with oil pump?

Thanks for responding.

They normally need servicing about the same time so if youre having it done you may aswell. I believe it should be every 50k to be done id check that as you dont wanna do the engine and cambelt then have the waterpump go.

Good Luck! but it sucks whats happened mate

So it just needs servicing? Does that just mean draining the water out? I'd assumed that would need to done to fit the new engine anyhow?

Thanks again Dan.

I've had a vehicle on the back of a trailer from Sheffield all the way to Bristol, Newcastle is only a couple of hours away.

£250 and you can have the whole car.
I can't send PM's on here yet but if you want pictures or videos of the engine running, drop me an email.

The azq and bme should be a direct replacement if you can I would get a bme it should have been available from about 2003/4 whilst the azq was available from launch in April 02, as for the 1.4 it will fit but you will more than likely need a new gear box and clutch, you will need an air box and mounts as the air filter isn't part of the engine cover like on the 1.2. Personally I suggest sticking with the 1.2 as it will be less hassle and you will not have trouble with licencing and insurance, eBay will of ourselves be your best bet, keep trying breakers as the engines were used in the ibiza, cordoba, polo, and fabia, so there are plenty of donor cars to choose from, also try advert boards like Gumtree or equivalent even try local newspapers or car magazines you should find a lot of people breaking cars rather than selling them to breakers

Thanks for that info, I'll stick with a 1.2, I've been told I there might also be compatability problems with the ECU as well. Could you tell me the differences between AZQ and BME engines?

As far as I am aware is the bme is newer and addressed some of the original issues seen in the azq like excess bore wear and failing piston rings, all of which meant the engine would only be good as scrap metal as trying to fix them would damage the engine block

I've done some research and it looks like you're right, I should have done some studying before I went to buy this thing. Will a BME motor be fully compatible with my car or will I need some extra parts/adapters?

Thanks again.
