Opinions are opinions, personally I like the sound. Not comparable to the new M5 but still, not bad. The focus st lacks a lot of sound

The point is that the 290's main difference from the 280 is the exhaust, so this is a video comparing the two, showing that the 290 has a slightly different exhaust note and idle sound, something that can't be illustrated with a picture. Hope that helps.

Has anyone asked a dealer about possibility of a retrofit? Also, anyone with a 290 had a chance to have a look underneath (or have a look for a module with VCDS) to see if its "computer generated" noise using the Active Sound System Audi use.

Afaik the sound actuator is by the windshield under the bonnet and is really just for inside sound? Or did you mean something else?

There are two types one for cabin sound (like the one you describe) and there are some models that have them inside the exhaust system. Some clever Germans managed to retro fit one to a FR some time ago (See Video here: http://www.stemei.de/pages/coding/seat-leon-5f/active-sound-system.php)
