Ok Strange problem,

210 LCR AMK, 2003.

6 Speed gearbox

When you go to shift into 1st say, just before you put it in 1st, i get a low thud noise, only happens when the car is slowly coasting forward out of gear. sometimes when its stationary.

its as you move the gear stick left then when you start to push forward to put it in 1st it knocks. sometimes happens in 1nd aswell.

could this be signs of the o2m shim fix being needed? was thinking that and a fresh load of gearbox oil.???

I don't have a clue mate prob gearbox is getting ready to pack in, try the shim and oil but with what your saying gearbox mate, look at the linkage and see what they look like

Sounds like a synchro issue.
Could always try shim and oil, but if the box is the original unit, you can only get access to the shaft end on 04 onward boxes (FZQ etc) without removal and strip out.

i thought the O2M shim was pretty easy.? access behind the pass wheel.

i need to check which box mine has.

Could it be FML??? thats whats on my Build sticker.

Cant really explain the issues, its like a quiet low thud. barely audible really, only happens as you put it into 1st gear, not a grinding noise or crunch.

Its not when you actually select 1st either, so you move gear stick to the left, and then as you push up, it makes the noise, you can wiggle the gearstick forwards and backwards and the noise repeats. goes into gear fine, drives fine, other than that its perfect.

Im gonna get some oil and shim kit just to be sure.

It couldnt be the selector cables could it? they have adjusters on them for tension afaik?

There is a way of resetting the alignment of the linkages. The 5 and 6 speed box are shown in this video of how it's done. It only takes 5 mins so is worth a go IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeOoDJuhSx8

Looks interesting, have you done this and does it make any difference to the gear changes

Yeah I've done it a couple of times to reset the linkages after disconnecting them to remove the gearbox etc. A lot of people don't know about it and refit the linkage without carrying it out, so there could be a fair few cars with it not set 100% right.

It's probably not worth doing unless you have an issue with gear selection, or have removed the linkages for some reason or other...........However it only takes 5 mins or so and is easy enough, so nothing to really lose by doing it.
