Porsche Cayenne 18Z brakes

Some time ago I fitted Porsche Cayenne 18Z front 6 pot and 4 pot rear calipers. Very pleased with the breaking capacity of these calipers so they are staying.

They where in urgent need of some cleaning, that has now been sorted with some water and soap.
Just need to brake of that rust from the wash away...

BBK bleeding procedure

Initiated the bleeding procedure of my BBK set up. Thought I'll share the correct manual bleeding procedure of 18Z calipers on a Leon 1P.

which parts are needed for this brake swap? any other changes need to be made in the suspension?

Disclaimer! Machining and altering the design of the hubs or calipers is dangerous as the original design is changed.
Thus, this can cause a brake failure and kill you. In no way do I recommend anyone to do this!

As the Cupra has front aluminum hubs you'll need to machine the Caliper mountings and the hubs.
If my memory serves me right, you 'll need to remove 5mm from each as indicated in the picture.

I've had this set up for two years with no issues so far.
Don't forget that the calipers where designed for a car with far more weight.

If you have steel hubs (not Cupra) the calipers should be a straight fit.

Besides the machining you'll need steel lines, bolts and rotors.
All described very nicely in this thread: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5830375-Brembo-18Z-6-piston-brake-upgrade.-DIY-BBK-write-up.-Big-brakes-for-under-a-grand

For the rear you need adapters, I got this set up:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK5-GTI-AUDI-A3-S3-SEAT-LEON-CUPRA-SKODA-VRS-PORSCHE-REAR-BRAKE-UPGRADE-/171094302701?hash=item27d603dfed

The adapters are utilizing the OEM rear brakes as parking brakes. That just adds more un-sprung weight so I'm simply driving without the fancy parking brake feature.
My engine acts as a perfect parking brake, I always leave the car in first gear.

Return of the engine

At last after supplier mess ups, supplier delays, funeral, injury, workshop delays.

Engine and gearbox are now at home with me :funk:
Let the fun start! Finally I can start to assemble all the pieces I've been collecting for a while.

Turbo fitted

The current focus at this stage is to mount the rear engine accessories as I want to fit the engine into the engine bay.
Thereby the sexy K16 turbo from TTE went on yesterday, lot's of joy at this stage of the Cupra R25 project.

New custom steel oil return, oil feed and coolant feed lines will be made. I already have a custom set up of lines that will fit but they are not steel lines.

Some of you may spot the EGT sensor, lovely feature that unfortunately was removed by Audi.
According to Elsa it was available until 2011.05 but the AUDI spare part catalog states 2010.08. My ECU is a early 2010 unit so I'm lucky as it will support the EGT sensor input.

Gearbox and clutch fitted

Further progress has been done during this week, 02Q gearbox and clutch is now fitted. I'm planning on getting the 5 pot into the engine bay the coming up Monday.
Hopefully no surprises will stop me at this phase but you never know what issue will arise at any moment when doing this type swaps.

Spot the lovely 4th gear support!

Earlier in this thread there was some doubts of what and how the gearbox housing had to be modified to fit.
Now that is clear to me, minor grinding of the upper part of the gearbox was needed.

Engine is in!

With almost no struggle the engine popped in and aligned nicely with the former engine mount fitting locations.
VAG's platform production process is really something...

To my knowledge this swap contains many "Firsts" :

  • First Leon 2.5 TFSI swap
  • First 2.5 NA engine block and 2.5 TFSI cylinder head build
  • First 2.5 TFSI and 02Q gearbox build
