TCS/ESP Sensor

The TCS/ESP light on the dash keeps coming on itermittently on my LCR05. Turn the engine off, and starts again and it might not come on for another 10 minutes of driving. It's been happening for the last 2 days. This did happen once last year but seemed to repair itself

Any idea what the problem might be?

Happening again today. A bit of research on this site suggests it could be a MAF sensor? Will this show up a fault code? Only TCS/ESP light comes on.

I would have thought a fault code would be there if a warning light is on. Does your engine run rough? I would have though a faulty maf would cause the engine to run rough.

first question is do you have TSC, or ESP?

if you just have traction control then its more likely maf, but if you have ESP there are a good number of things it could be. maf may well be the favourite still, but lateral G sensors, steering angle, and so on...

ideally you would get it scanned to confirm rather than randomly swapping parts which could prove costly.

Cheers I'll try scanning it with vcds lite (not sure if it picks up all faults, but I'll have a go). I assume I have ESP as there's an ESP button!

ah i see you drive a cupra R, so yes you have ESP (i should read your posts more thoroughly)

let us know what you find when you scan it.

I finally got round to scanning it (after some PC problems).

I've got an error code:-

Component:ESP Front MK60 0101
1 fault found:
00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85)
003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittant.

What does this mean!!!?

Cheers!

steering angle sensor: there is a sensor on the steering column that measures the angle of the steering wheel.
The ESP needs this to work, there are also G sensors in the car, ESP measures what the car is doing via the G sensors, ABS, throttle, and steering angle.

If any of these sensors are not working then you can get an ESP fault.

There is either a mechanical fault with the sensor, (im not sure what the second fault is) or its also possible the angle is out of calibration. (ie its not reading zero when straight) have you have tracking or anthing done before this issue came to light?

To replace the sensor its a steering wheel off job. bear in mind its not just a case of replacing the sensor, the new one will need to be set up on the car via vagcom or the like. they are also not cheap at all.

No tracking of late. But it was tracked around a year ago, possibly before I noticed the light coming on for the first time - but it only happened once until the last few weeks, where it's happened a few times.

Would a tracking possibly solve it?

i suspect not, its more of an issue if the tracking is way out and they adjust it to one side and dont maintain straight ahead.

the bad news is the sensors are about £250 then theres getting it programmed in.

Ouch. I did have an advisory on an MOT a few months back, stating slight play on steering column. Could this be connected?

Mine is coming on intermittemtly, especially under strong braking. It goes away when restating engine. I guess one of sensors must be faulty. Might take it to the stealers at some point for an estimate.
